He said Tesla was nearing a prototype demonstration, but did not disclose the design. The interview is a teaser—not evidence that a Roadster has flown, is certified as an aircraft, or is available to buy.
What Musk said about the Roadster
In the interview, Rogan asked whether Tesla was still making the Roadster. Musk answered, “Eventually,” then said, “We’re getting close to demonstrating the prototype.” He described the planned demonstration as “unforgettable.”
When Rogan asked whether Musk meant a flying car, Musk invoked Peter Thiel’s observation that the future was supposed to have flying cars. He added, “I think if Peter wants a flying car, we should be able to buy one.” Pressed about a wing or the vehicle’s design, Musk replied, “I can’t do the unveil before the unveil.”
Musk hoped the demonstration would happen before the end of 2025. That was a forecast during the interview, not confirmation that a demonstration took place. The transcript does not describe a flight mechanism, give engineering specifications, or show the vehicle flying. Tesla’s SEC-filed materials identify the interview date and include the transcript as an exhibit; the dialogue itself records what Musk said, not an independently verified test.

Does Tesla have a flying car?
The interview does not establish that Tesla has demonstrated a flying car. Tesla’s public Roadster page describes an all-electric sports car and does not document flight capability. On the available evidence, “Musk teased a possible flying-car angle for a Roadster prototype” is accurate; “Tesla unveiled a flying car” or “the Roadster flies” goes beyond what the sources show.
There is also no evidence here of aircraft certification, production, or a vehicle customers can purchase as a flying car. The distinction matters: a promised demonstration and an operational aircraft are different claims, and the interview supports only the former.

How the flying-car idea compares with an eVTOL
Axios used electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, as a nearby existing market category in its coverage of the remarks. That is a useful comparison, not confirmation that Musk’s teased Roadster is an eVTOL. The interview provides too little technical detail to classify the proposed vehicle as an aircraft.
| Question | Teased Roadster | eVTOL category |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Tesla publicly describes the Roadster as an all-electric sports car; the interview suggests a possible flying-car connection but does not specify its intended use in detail. Tesla; interview transcript | Aircraft designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing, as described in Axios’s context for the term. Axios |
| Lift and propulsion design | Not disclosed in the interview transcript. Transcript | Not specified in the Axios article’s comparison to Musk’s comments. Axios |
| Evidence status | An interview teaser about a planned prototype demonstration; no flight is shown or documented in the transcript. Transcript | A comparison category in Axios’s coverage, not evidence about the Roadster’s capabilities. Axios |

What Musk said about flying Roadsters in 2018
On a 2018 appearance on Rogan’s show, Musk discussed a possible Roadster performance package with cold-gas thrusters using compressed air, a high-pressure tank, and an electric pump. He also talked about noise and airflow as practical problems for flying cars, including the line, “Your neighbors are not going to be happy if you land a flying car in your backyard.” The 2018 interview documents those earlier ideas; it does not establish that the systems became production equipment or that the newer prototype uses them.
