For UK shift-based businesses, the five options in this comparison are Workforce.com, Quinyx, SD Worx Time, Deputy and RotaCloud. They serve different needs: Workforce.com is positioned for multi-site operations, Quinyx for complex scheduling at larger organizations, SD Worx Time for businesses using SD Worx payroll, Deputy for smaller shift-based teams and RotaCloud for independent venues. There is no universal winner: choose by workforce size, clock-in needs, scheduling rules and payroll compatibility, then confirm current features and pricing for your location.
How to choose time and attendance software
Time and attendance software records when employees work and turns those records into reviewed time data for payroll. Depending on the product and setup, workers may clock in at a dedicated terminal, a shared tablet, a browser or a mobile app. The right channel depends on where people work and what verification your operation needs.
Before comparing vendors, map the work process you need the software to handle:
- Workforce and locations: Note team size, number of sites, shift patterns and whether employees move between locations.
- Clock-in method: Decide whether you need a physical terminal, shared kiosk, web access or mobile clocking. If location controls or biometric options matter, confirm which are available in the specific edition and region.
- Rules and exceptions: Check support for breaks, leave, overtime, multiple pay rates and the approval or correction of missed punches.
- Review and records: Establish who checks timesheets, how exceptions are resolved and what audit history you need.
- Payroll and HR compatibility: Verify the exact product, edition and data fields supported—not just whether an integration is advertised.
- Cost and rollout: Request current pricing and clarify setup, configuration, hardware and implementation requirements.
Software can help apply configured rules, but it does not replace employer review or legal advice. Check applicable requirements with authoritative sources for your jurisdiction.

Five time and attendance systems compared
The following shortlist reflects a UK-focused buyer guide published by Workforce.com in 2026. Its audience descriptions and limitations are that publisher’s assessments, not an independent product test or a universal ranking. Confirm current capabilities, compatibility and pricing with each provider.
| Product | Best fit according to the UK guide | Scope and considerations reported by the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Workforce.com | Multi-site, shift-based businesses seeking time tracking, scheduling, HR and payroll in one system | Quote-based pricing; initial setup and configuration required. |
| Quinyx | Larger organizations with complex scheduling | Enterprise-oriented; payroll requires third-party integration. |
| SD Worx Time | Mid-market and enterprise businesses aligned with SD Worx payroll | The guide reports that it lacks native scheduling. |
| Deputy | Smaller shift-based businesses needing mobile clocking | The guide reports no native payroll or HR and names Xero, Sage, QuickBooks and BrightPay among payroll integrations. |
| RotaCloud | Independent UK venues needing rota and time tracking together | The guide reports limited payroll integrations and says it is not positioned for complex multi-site hierarchies. |
Workforce.com: multi-site operations
Consider Workforce.com if you want time tracking alongside scheduling, HR and payroll functions in a multi-site shift-work setting. The UK guide flags initial setup and configuration as a consideration, so ask what implementation involves, which payroll systems and fields are supported, and whether the capabilities you need are included in the proposed package. The guide lists pricing as quote-based.
Quinyx: complex scheduling at larger organizations
Quinyx is positioned by the guide for larger employers with complex scheduling needs. Its enterprise orientation may suit an operation with substantial workforce-planning requirements, but the guide says payroll depends on a third-party integration. Confirm the integration partner, supported data, ongoing reconciliation steps and implementation workload before choosing it.
SD Worx Time: businesses using SD Worx payroll
SD Worx Time is presented as a fit for mid-market and enterprise businesses aligned with SD Worx payroll. The guide reports that it does not include native scheduling. If rota planning is central to your process, establish what separate scheduling tool or workflow would be required and how its data would connect.

Deputy: smaller shift-based teams
Deputy is positioned for smaller shift-based businesses that want mobile clocking. The guide names Xero, Sage, QuickBooks and BrightPay as payroll integration options, while reporting no native payroll or HR. Confirm that the exact payroll edition you use is supported and that the integration passes the hours, rates and employee information your payroll run requires.
RotaCloud: independent venues
RotaCloud combines rota and time-tracking functions and is positioned for independent UK venues. The guide reports limited payroll integration options and says it is not aimed at complex multi-site hierarchies. Ask for a demonstration of the site structure and payroll handoff using a representative example from your operation.
Clock-in methods and employee time clocks
A phone app is not the only way to record attendance. UKG describes biometric clocks, mobile apps and web systems; its InTouch DX product is a dedicated smart timeclock. ADP describes smart clocks, web timesheets, shared-tablet kiosk apps and personal mobile apps. ADP says its clock and kiosk options are available to customers using ADP Workforce Now and RUN powered by ADP; availability, device needs and plan details should be confirmed with ADP.
UKG describes InTouch DX features including facial recognition, quick authentication, alerts, schedule updates and language options. ADP describes geofencing and biometric options. These are vendor-reported capabilities, not independent proof of accuracy or fraud reduction. A physical employee time clock must be compatible with the chosen software; do not assume generic hardware will work. Check the vendor’s device and edition requirements before buying a terminal or using a shared tablet for employee clock-in.

Payroll integrations: check what actually syncs
An integration badge does not tell you whether a payroll handoff fits your workflow. ADP says its time totals can flow to payroll, and UKG says time and attendance data can feed payroll. For third-party connections, ask which hours and employee details transfer, whether leave and multiple rates are handled, and whether someone must export, review or reconcile data manually.
Gusto’s integration documentation illustrates why those details matter. For its listed time-tracking integrations, it says regular hours, overtime, double overtime and PTO can sync; contractor hours are not supported. It also says only one integration’s data source is used for a payroll sync at a time before submission. Gusto says Deputy, Homebase and WhenIWork support multiple pay rates, with reporting limitations in how those rates appear. Check Gusto’s current app directory and software integrations overview and test the exact workflow you plan to use.
What the vendor claims do—and do not—establish
Product pages can help identify features to evaluate, but vendor descriptions do not independently establish ease of use, compliance, accuracy or savings. UKG describes a rules engine for pay and attendance policies, exception alerts and audit-ready tracking, and says attendance data can feed payroll. ADP describes handling breaks, PTO, holidays and overtime, and says calculated totals are sent to payroll. Ask for a demonstration with your own rules and exception cases rather than assuming a listed capability will match your setup.
UKG’s product page presents a customer testimonial from Victoria Askew, Head of HR Systems at 2 Sisters Food Group, about moving from manual worker communications to shift broadcasts in UKG. The same page reports 5,000 hours saved per year in employee time processing. Both are vendor-presented claims; the year for the savings figure is not stated, and it should not be treated as a general forecast or independently audited result.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist and evaluation process
- Define the scope: Record your sites, workforce types, shift patterns, required clock-in channels and payroll system.
- Choose candidates by fit: Use the UK guide’s positioning above to narrow the shortlist, not as a substitute for your requirements or a universal ranking.
- Verify the workflow: Ask each provider to show clock-in, missed-punch correction, timesheet approval, exception handling and the payroll handoff for your exact setup.
- Check integration limits: Confirm supported editions and regions, synced fields, multiple pay rates, contractors, location handling, data-source restrictions and remaining manual work.
- Confirm total implementation needs: Request current pricing and clarify configuration, training, support, compatible hardware and any third-party services.
- Run a representative pilot: Where available, test realistic shifts and exceptions with a small group before relying on the system for a full payroll cycle.
