The highest figures often cited are for complete tea sets or services, and accounts of one prominent sale conflict. Here are the reported high-value sales, alongside catalogue examples that show why a teapot’s estimate is not the same as its final price.
Why there is no reliable all-time teapot ranking
A teapot and a tea service are not interchangeable auction lots. A service may include a pot, cups, a tray, and other pieces; its sale price cannot be presented as the price of one teapot. The reports also differ in currency and verification: the sources here do not provide a consistent basis for converting currencies, accounting for buyer’s premiums, or confirming every result against an original auction lot record.
That matters particularly for Gu Jingzhou’s Nine Dragons. A 2025 SiYuTao Teapot article describes it as a tea service that included a teapot, cups, and tray, and reports a 2014 China Guardian price of HK$89.6 million (US$11.6 million). A 2014 Zisha.com trade article instead reports RMB 28.75 million for a Nine Dragons tea set at China Guardian. Those figures are materially different, and the available sources do not reconcile them. Neither should be treated as a verified record price for one teapot. SiYuTao Teapot’s account; Zisha.com’s report.
The highest reported tea-service figures
| Object and sale report | Reported figure | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nine Dragons, attributed to Gu Jingzhou; China Guardian, 2014 | HK$89.6 million (US$11.6 million), as reported by SiYuTao Teapot in 2025; RMB 28.75 million, as reported by Zisha.com in 2014 | Both accounts describe a tea service or set, not just a pot. The figures conflict, and no primary lot record in the available sources resolves the discrepancy. |
| Squirrel and Grapes, attributed to Gu Jingzhou; Dongzheng Auctions, Beijing, 2015 | US$16.2 million, as reported by Artnet in 2016 | Artnet calls it a tea set and says it reportedly sold for that amount. The auction-house lot record was not located in the available sources. |
Artnet’s 2016 market report says the Squirrel and Grapes tea set was the highest-priced object in its Chinese ceramics and works of art sector in 2015. Its use of “reportedly” is important: this is a secondary market report, not a confirmed single-teapot auction record. Read Artnet’s report.

Gu Jingzhou appears in both of the most striking reports, but they concern tea sets and come with different evidence limits. The available examples do not establish which maker, material, or design feature independently drives a price; they are not a systematic analysis of auction values.

Huang Yulin’s dragon-carp Yixing teapot
Christie’s catalogues a Yixing teapot and cover attributed to Huang Yulin and dated to the Guangxu period (1875–1908). The cover has a movable dragon head with an extendable tongue, while the body depicts a dragon and a carp. Christie’s interprets the carp leaping over the “Dragon Gate” as a traditional symbol of success in the civil-service examinations and advancement in status. The catalogue gives an estimate of HK$500,000–800,000; its opened page does not state a realized price. See the Christie’s catalogue entry.

Qianlong-period white jade teapot
Another Christie’s catalogue entry describes a lobed white jade teapot dated to the Qianlong period (1736–1795). It has a carved body, fitted cover, and branch-like C-shaped handle. The catalogue essay discusses the difficulty of hollowing a vessel through a narrow neck and places its material and style within imperial jade-carving traditions. This is catalogue interpretation and context, not a realized price or independent confirmation of provenance. See the Christie’s catalogue entry.
Qianlong-marked famille rose teapot
Christie’s also catalogues a turquoise-ground famille rose lobed teapot bearing a Qianlong six-character seal mark and dated to the Qianlong period (1736–1795). Its essay reads the lotus and bat motifs as auspicious wordplay expressing a wish for continuing blessings. The opened page supplies object context, not a comparable realized-price figure. See the Christie’s catalogue entry.

Keep estimates, sale prices, and object labels separate
A catalogue estimate is an auction house’s stated valuation range, not proof that a lot sold within it—or sold at all. Likewise, a catalogue description, maker attribution, period dating, or provenance should be reported as the auction house presents it, rather than upgraded into independently verified fact.
One further figure illustrates why the object label matters: Sotheby’s catalogue text reports HK$75.5 million for a Millicent Rogers-associated jade vessel sold in 2017 and calls it a record for a jade vessel. The cited passage does not identify that object as a teapot, so it should not be used as a teapot record. Read Sotheby’s catalogue text.

For a defensible price comparison, the lot record would need to identify exactly what was sold, confirm the result, state the sale currency, and make clear whether the amount includes the buyer’s premium. Without that consistent evidence, reported tea-service prices are useful market reference points, not a reliable ranked list of individual teapots.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- ANTIQUE HAND-HAMMERED DESIGN, A WORK OF ART - Each pot carries the richly textured hand-hammered surface that gives it an old-world, artisan character no smooth kettle can match, so it reads as an exquisite piece of decor the moment it touches the stove or table. Practical as it is beautiful, this vintage teapot quietly elevates a rustic kitchen, a traditional tearoom, or a modern countertop alike.
- THICKENED STEEL WITH REMOVABLE FINE-HOLE FILTER - The body is formed from thickened food-grade stainless steel with exquisite workmanship, giving it a solid, stable feel and years of dependable daily brewing. The included fine-hole tea filter lifts out for easy cleaning and keeps leaves fully contained, so loose leaf, herbal, and blooming teas all steep clear and full-flavored, cup after cup.
- CONCAVE LID SEAT, CHAIN-LINKED LID, COOL-TOUCH KNOB - The concave design on the upper part of the kettle holds the lid securely in place whether or not the filter is inside, so nothing shifts while you pour. A small iron chain links the lid to the body so it can never be misplaced, and the bead on top is made of high-strength plastic that blocks heat conduction, letting you lift the lid barehanded even mid-brew.
- EASY CARE WITH IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTES - Wipe the hammered surface dry after washing to keep its warm patina bright. The teapot is suitable for gas stoves and electric stoves,For safe use, never let the kettle boil dry, and keep the lid out of high-temperature sterilization cabinets or ovens, washing it gently by hand instead. Follow these simple habits and the pot will serve beautiful, reliable tea for years of daily brewing.
- VERSATILE 60 OZ BREWER FOR EVERY SETTING - The 1.8l (60 oz) capacity makes tea and heats coffee alike, filling several cups in one brew for family tea time, restaurant service, or outdoor gatherings. Finished in a warm copper tone that suits cottage, farmhouse, and classic kitchens, it arrives ready to gift - a memorable choice for housewarmings, weddings, and holidays for any tea lover.
