Equinix announced on February 6, 2008, that it had acquired Virtu Secure Webservices B.V., a Netherlands-based, network-neutral data-center services provider. The deal was set to give Equinix operations in Enschede and Zwolle immediately, with Amsterdam operations expected by mid-2008.

Who did Equinix acquire?

The acquired company was Virtu Secure Webservices B.V. Equinix described Virtu as a Netherlands-based provider of network-neutral data-center services and said it was founded in 1999. Equinix’s February 6, 2008 announcement presented the purchase as part of its broader expansion program; the company also cited its 2007 acquisition of IXEurope as prior context.

Where and when were Virtu’s operations?

Equinix said the deal would immediately provide data-center operations in Enschede and Zwolle, with operations in Amsterdam expected by mid-2008. That was the timetable stated in the announcement, not confirmation of the date Amsterdam operations were ultimately completed.

How much did Equinix pay?

Data Center Knowledge reported on February 6, 2008, that the purchase price was $48 million. Equinix’s announcement did not state a price, so the amount is attributable to that contemporary report rather than the company release.

What did Virtu bring to the deal?

Data Center Knowledge reported that Virtu served more than 400 enterprise, systems-integrator, and government customers. It named IBM, TUI/Thomson, the Netherlands Department of Finance, and Ten Cate among them. These customer figures and names come from that report; Equinix’s announcement did not provide them.
