No verified source in the material reviewed establishes that former footballer Mathieu Flamini is worth £10 billion. The figure appears to confuse personal wealth with the size of a market his company hoped to serve. In a 2018 interview with L’Équipe, as reported by FotMob, Flamini said a reported €30 billion figure referred to the total market targeted by GF Biochemicals—not his fortune and not the company’s valuation.
Where the billion-pound claim comes from
The £10 billion claim is not supported by the source trail available here. The figure addressed directly by Flamini was €30 billion, not £10 billion. In his 2018 L’Équipe interview, reported by FotMob, he said: “There was a misunderstanding.” He explained that the sum described the total market GF Biochemicals wanted to address with its technologies. He also stated: “And this sum does not correspond to the valuation of my company, GF Biochemicals.”

That distinction matters: a market opportunity is not money earned or owned by a company or its founder. The reporting of a large market figure as a personal fortune does not verify either a billionaire status or a company valuation.
What the different financial figures mean
- Personal net worth: an estimate of an individual’s assets minus liabilities. No verified current figure for Flamini’s net worth is established in the sources cited here.
- Company valuation: an estimate of what a business is worth. Flamini specifically said the €30 billion figure was not GF Biochemicals’ valuation; a current company valuation is not established here.
- Company revenue: money the business earns from sales over a period. The cited sources do not establish GF Biochemicals’ revenue.
- Founder ownership: the portion of a company owned by a founder. The sources do not establish Flamini’s current ownership percentage.
- Total addressable market: the potential market a business aims to serve. Flamini described the reported €30 billion as this kind of figure, not as personal wealth.

The business focuses on industrial chemistry, including levulinic acid and derivatives made from biomass. The company’s May 2025 description of its RE:CHEMISTRY platform says it uses levulinic acid derived from agricultural waste to make bio-based solvents. POLITICO’s June 2026 report describes GF Biochemicals as turning agricultural waste into bio-based chemicals used in products such as paints, cosmetics and cleaning products.
How Flamini says the business began
In an interview with Julius Baer, Flamini said he met Granata while playing for AC Milan. They shared an interest in environmental issues and decided to investigate levulinic acid. He described working with researchers at Milan Polytechnic, developing laboratory research and prototypes, and then trying to move from lab work to continuous industrial-scale production. This is Flamini’s account of the company’s development, rather than independent verification of every technical or market claim.
Rank #2
In the same interview, Flamini said levulinic acid had been identified by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of “the 12 molecules of the future.” That is a historical statement attributed to him, not evidence of a current Department of Energy ranking.

The sources establish a business context for the wealth story, but they do not provide a reliable current estimate of Flamini’s personal net worth, his ownership stake, GF Biochemicals’ valuation or its revenue. The €30 billion figure was Flamini’s description of a target market in 2018; it should not be treated as a measure of his finances or as evidence that the company captured that market. No verified evidence here supports the £10 billion personal-wealth claim.
