Re:

Best Insulation for a Cargo Trailer Conversion: How to Choose

Closed-cell spray foam and rigid foam board are both candidates for cargo trailer conversions, but neither is universally best. Compare moisture control, air sealing, thickness, metal framing, and repair access before choosing.

There is no single insulation that is best for every cargo trailer conversion. Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam is a strong option when you need insulation to conform to corrugated surfaces while also helping control air and vapor movement. Rigid foam board is another practical choice, especially for DIY projects, but its seams, attachment, and moisture strategy need careful planning. The right assembly depends on your trailer, climate, occupancy, and available space—not just the material’s advertised R-value.

Start with the assembly, not a material ranking

Insulation works as part of a set of layers that manage heat, air, vapor, and water. A choice that performs well in one building assembly may not behave the same way in a metal trailer. The sources cited here discuss residential roofs and walls; they do not validate a universal cargo-trailer specification or report controlled trailer comparisons.

Before comparing products, establish how you will use the trailer and what the shell allows. The useful questions are:

  • How much thickness can the walls, roof, and floor accommodate?
  • How will you make the air-control layer continuous, including around framing, corners, and openings?
  • What are the climate, heating and cooling pattern, and expected indoor moisture load?
  • How will you limit thermal bridges through the metal framing?
  • Can the shell and insulation assembly dry if water gets in, and can you inspect or repair it later?
  • What installation skill, cost, and access constraints apply to your project?

Project-specific costs and trailer-tested performance figures are not established by the sources available for this guide.

How the main insulation options compare

Option Potential strengths Trade-offs and limits
Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam Can conform to irregular surfaces and, in selected assemblies, provide insulation along with air and vapor control. The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance describes typical closed-cell foam as air-impermeable at specified thicknesses and as having high R-value per inch and vapor resistance (SPFA; see also Building Science Corporation’s BSI-116). These are general category descriptions, not trailer-specific validation. Because a low-drying assembly can make trapped moisture harder to remove, water management and installation quality matter.
Rigid foam insulation board A practical category to compare for DIY work. Building-science sources discuss rigid foam in condensation-control wall assemblies and taped rigid-insulation joints (PNNL Building America Solution Center; Building Science Corporation). The cited sources do not establish a board type, thickness, fastening method, adhesive, or edge detail for a particular cargo trailer. Seams and attachment need to be designed for the actual shell.
Open-cell spray foam or fibrous batts These are vapor-permeable options in some residential assemblies; climate and assembly design can affect whether additional vapor control is needed (Building Science Corporation). Do not assume residential framing details transfer to metal trailer walls. The substrate and available drying paths differ.

When closed-cell spray foam may fit

Closed-cell foam is worth considering where the trailer’s corrugations and framing make it difficult to fit board or batts closely, or where limited depth makes insulation value per inch important. In selected assemblies it can contribute to air and vapor control as well as insulation. That does not make it a complete moisture-management system: leaks, water entry, and application defects still matter, and reduced drying potential can make hidden moisture consequential.

BASF lists 7.0–7.6 R per inch for its WALLTITE product on its product page (manufacturer claim, accessed 2026). This is not an independently verified value for a trailer assembly or a promise of whole-wall performance. BASF’s product statements apply to WALLTITE, not to every spray foam or installation.

  • The sound dampening material comes in handy size sheets which make it easier in terms of the cutting and installation process and it’s flexible which makes it easy to install with or without a roller.

When rigid foam board may fit

Rigid board gives a DIY builder a physical insulation category to compare and can be used with deliberately treated joints. Building-science guidance discusses taped joints in rigid insulation, but the cited material does not certify any particular board, tape, adhesive, fastener, or thickness for a mobile metal shell. Confirm compatibility with the trailer substrate and the board manufacturer’s installation requirements before settling on a detail.

Pay particular attention to continuity at edges and around framing and openings. A board layer with untreated gaps may not provide the intended air-control continuity, and the way the board is attached must suit the shell and planned finish. No trailer-specific fastening or adhesive method is established in the cited sources.

Why R-value alone cannot answer the question

Published R-values describe insulation material under stated conditions; the performance of a finished wall can be lower when heat bypasses insulation through framing. In a residential framed-wall example, Building Science Corporation reports that framing thermal bridges reduce effective wall R-value compared with the insulation’s installed value (BSI-001: The Perfect Wall). The principle makes metal trailer framing important to consider, but the amount of performance loss in any particular trailer is not established here.

Published figures also need their scope kept intact. Building Science Corporation’s residential spray-foam wall example gives aged values of R-5.5 to R-6.5 per inch for high-density foam and approximately R-3.6 per inch for low-density foam; the publication year is not established in the cited material (BSI-001: The Perfect Wall). These are example material values, not a trailer-wall rating.

Condensation depends on climate and moisture control

Insulation type alone cannot guarantee a condensation-safe trailer. Risk depends on climate, indoor moisture, the assembly layers, and continuity of air control: humid air or vapor reaching a cold surface can create conditions for condensation, while the ability of the assembly to dry matters if water enters.

Building Science Corporation’s roof-condensation table shows rigid or air-impermeable insulation values ranging from R-5 to R-35 across climate zones 1 through 8. It is adapted from Table R 806.5 of the 2015 International Residential Code and concerns residential roofs, not cargo trailers (BSI-119: Conditioned and Unconditioned). Do not use those figures as a trailer design rule or transfer residential code ratios directly to a mobile metal shell.

A practical way to choose

  1. Define the use. Identify the climate, whether the trailer will be heated or cooled, how regularly it will be occupied, and likely indoor moisture sources.
  2. Measure available space. Determine usable depth at the walls, roof, and floor, accounting for framing and the planned finish.
  3. Choose a moisture strategy. Decide how the assembly will control air and vapor movement and how it can manage water entry and drying. Do not treat insulation as a substitute for water management.
  4. Plan continuity and thermal bridges. Map seams, edges, framing, corners, and openings so the intended control layers do not stop at convenient panel boundaries.
  5. Check product and substrate compatibility. For board, confirm attachment, adhesive, and seam-treatment suitability. For spray foam, assess installation quality and the consequences of limiting drying.
  6. Balance performance with access and repair. Consider whether the chosen assembly will leave the metal shell inspectable or make later leak diagnosis and repairs harder.

Because the trailer’s construction and operating conditions change the answer, no target thickness or universal material winner can be established without those project details.
