Canoo developed and presented a pickup concept, but its filings do not establish that the company put a pickup into production or sold one. The business failed amid documented financing and manufacturing challenges, then filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in January 2025. Its first production vehicles were delivery vans—not pickups.
Did Canoo ever build a pickup truck?
It depends on what “built” means. Canoo developed a pickup program and presented the vehicle, but its 2023 annual report listed the Pickup as a future model. The same report identified the Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (LDV) models 130 and 190 as its first production vehicles. Canoo therefore had a pickup design and development effort, but the company’s filings do not document a production pickup launch or retail deliveries. Canoo’s 2023 Form 10-K describes the distinction.
Canoo said it completed 22 vehicles in 2023, including 17 in the fourth quarter, and began commercial fleet deliveries in Q4. Its announcement does not identify those vehicles as pickups; the annual report identifies the LDV as the first production vehicle. The 22-vehicle figure is not evidence that any pickups were built. Canoo’s full-year 2023 results announcement gives the company-reported count.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s manufacturer record for Canoo includes truck and pickup among vehicle types. That is regulatory manufacturer information, not proof that a pickup was completed, sold, or delivered. The official material cited here does not establish how many pickup prototypes, if any, were completed.

What happened to Canoo?
Canoo filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on January 17, 2025, rather than seeking a Chapter 11 reorganization. In its filing, the company said a trustee would take control of its assets and liabilities and liquidate assets under the Bankruptcy Code. Canoo’s January 17, 2025 SEC filing records the bankruptcy filing and liquidation plan.
A 2026 District of Delaware opinion says the debtor companies had ceased operations as of the bankruptcy filing and that a sale of assets to WHS Energy Solutions closed on April 11, 2025. The court opinion provides that later status. Chapter 7 meant liquidation, not a continued Canoo vehicle business that might later bring the pickup to market.

Why did Canoo fail?
The available record does not establish one definitive cause. Canoo’s own filings, however, document a difficult combination of financing needs and manufacturing and commercial risks. The company’s plan relied on turning a modular electric-vehicle platform and several planned vehicle types into repeatable production and sales. Its 2023 annual report described limited LDV production, said other models would follow, and acknowledged that significant milestones remained and launch timing had previously been reassessed. The annual report sets out that context.
Scaling manufacturing was unproven
In its first-quarter 2024 filing, Canoo said, “We have no experience to date in high volume manufacture of our EVs.” It warned that failing to build and tool facilities, or to maintain a contract-manufacturing relationship, could prevent production. That is a company-disclosed execution risk—not proof by itself of a single cause of the bankruptcy. Canoo’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2024 details the risks.

Cash needs and operating losses added pressure
Canoo reported net cash used in operating activities of $251.1 million in 2023, compared with $400.5 million in 2022. Those are company-reported annual figures, not measures of net loss. The same results announcement separately reported a $302.6 million GAAP net loss for 2023; net loss and cash used in operations are different financial measures. The company’s filings also warned that it needed additional capital. Canoo’s results announcement reports the figures and periods.
Suppliers, customers, and launch timing remained risks
Canoo’s filings also identified supplier concentration, availability of raw materials and components, potential production delays, and uncertainty about attracting customers. These risks mattered because a vehicle program needs dependable parts, financing, production capacity, and buyers to move from prototype to sustainable commercial deliveries. They are documented challenges in the company’s disclosures, but they should not be presented as individually proven causes of the liquidation. There is no documented production Canoo pickup to buy in the cited official records. Canoo’s planned pickup should be understood as a developed and presented vehicle program, not a retail model that reached established series production. The company’s liquidation closed the prospect of Canoo itself carrying that planned pickup into a normal launch.
