There’s no single mileage amount: the SkyMiles price depends on your route, travel dates, itinerary and available award seats. Search the exact trip on Delta to see its current price. You’ll also owe applicable taxes and fees, so a “free” flight is not necessarily $0 at checkout.
Why there is no fixed SkyMiles price
Delta does not publish one universal award chart that sets the mileage price for every flight. Instead, the amount appears when you search a specific trip, and it can vary by date and itinerary. Award seats are subject to availability and capacity controls.
Delta says, “There are no blackout dates on any Delta Air Lines flight.” That does not mean every seat is bookable with miles, or that a low-mileage award is available on every departure. Availability and mileage prices can differ across flights and markets.
How to find the mileage price for your trip
- Go to Delta’s Travel with Miles page and book on delta.com, or open the Fly Delta app.
- On the website, select “Shop with Miles.” In the app, select “Show Price in Miles.”
- Enter your origin, destination and travel dates, then search.
- Compare dates in the flexible Award calendar, which can show lower-priced options for your search.
- Before booking, check the itinerary’s cash taxes and fees and confirm that the award seat is available.
Without a route and dates, there is no reliable mileage quote to give. Delta’s booking search is the place to check the current amount for your trip.

What “free flight” still costs
With Award Travel, miles cover the displayed mileage price, but applicable taxes and fees are due at booking. Under Delta’s SkyMiles Program Rules, domestic U.S. Award Travel has at least $11.20 in U.S. government taxes and fees. That is a minimum, not necessarily the total you will pay.
International itineraries can carry government, airport, security, inspection and carrier-imposed charges. Delta says foreign government taxes and fees and/or carrier-imposed fees can reach up to $600, depending on the itinerary. That is a possible upper amount, not a standard charge for every international award. Check the checkout total for your specific trip.

Award Travel and Pay with Miles are different
Award Travel
You redeem the mileage amount Delta displays for an available award itinerary, plus applicable taxes and fees. Delta says members can book for themselves or someone else and redeem on Delta or partner airlines, subject to availability. See Delta’s Award Travel information.
Pay with Miles
This is a separate benefit for eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members, not a universal award-flight price. Delta’s terms describe a 5,000-mile minimum, redemptions in 5,000-mile increments and up to $50 off per 5,000 miles on eligible Delta-operated tickets. It may be an option when you do not have enough miles for an Award Travel booking, but compare the cash fare and miles used; it is a discount against an eligible ticket rather than the same thing as booking an award seat. Delta also advertises a 15% Award Travel discount for eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members on Delta flights. The discount excludes partner-operated flights and taxes and fees. Do not assume you qualify, or that this benefit applies to partner flights; confirm the current terms for your card on Delta’s Travel with Miles page.

When several dates or itineraries work, compare the mileage price alongside the cash due, travel date, routing and operating carrier. A lower mileage quote may come with a less convenient itinerary, and partner-operated flights are excluded from the advertised 15% card discount. There is no general “best value” choice without comparing the current cash fare and mileage options for your actual trip.
