Spotify’s latest US Premium price increase sends more money to Spotify, but the available figures do not show how much extra revenue from this specific change goes to the company, music rightsholders, or artists. Spotify says it pays royalties to selected rightsholders and retains roughly one-third of music revenue to reinvest in its service. Artists and songwriters receive whatever their individual agreements provide—not an equal or guaranteed share of the increase.
What Spotify’s latest US price update means for subscribers
Spotify announced on January 15, 2026, that it was updating Premium prices in the US, Estonia, and Latvia. Spotify’s US Premium page currently lists these monthly rates; eligibility, features, and any trial offer vary by plan, so these are listed recurring prices rather than necessarily the first amount every subscriber will pay: Spotify’s announcement and US Premium plans.

Spotify says it emails affected subscribers and gives them a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price takes effect. The exact timing for an account depends on the notice Spotify sends that subscriber. Its price-update help page explains what to do if you do not want to pay the new rate.
Where the subscription money goes
- Subscribers pay Spotify. Premium subscription payments are Spotify’s revenue; the plan price is not a direct payment to a particular artist.
- Spotify pays music royalties to rightsholders. Spotify says royalties go to the selected rightsholders for recordings and compositions. These may include record labels, distributors, publishers, or other rights-holders.
- Rightsholders pay artists and songwriters under their agreements. Spotify does not generally pay each performer or songwriter directly. The contractual arrangements between creators and their rightsholders determine what reaches them.
- Spotify retains part of music revenue. Spotify Head of Music Charlie Hellman has said the company pays roughly two-thirds of music revenue to the industry and retains the other third to reinvest in its service. This is Spotify’s broad description of its allocation, not an audited accounting of this price increase.
Spotify’s royalties guide describes the payment chain and how royalty calculations work.

Why an increase does not mean every artist gets a raise
Royalties are based on streamshare, not a fixed per-stream rate
Spotify says its royalty system is based on streamshare: a rightsholder’s share of eligible listening, relative to other listening, helps determine its share of the royalty pool. A listener’s country and subscription plan, overall streaming volume, and the rightsholder’s share can affect the result. There is no single official amount Spotify pays for every stream, and a higher subscription price does not translate into a fixed extra amount for each artist.
Contracts determine what creators receive
Spotify’s description of traditional label arrangements says labels typically receive the majority share, while some service or distribution models allow artists to retain nearly all earnings after fees. Publishing agreements also differ, so songwriters’ outcomes depend on their own arrangements. A larger payment to a rightsholder therefore does not establish how much any individual artist or songwriter receives.

What Spotify’s payout figures do—and don’t—show
Spotify has reported substantial payments to the music business, but those company-wide totals are not evidence of how the January 2026 US price increase was divided.
- More than $11 billion in 2025: Spotify reported paying more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025, up more than 10% from 2024. Spotify also said independent artists and labels accounted for half of all royalties. These are Spotify-reported figures, not an independently isolated measure of the price update’s effect. Spotify’s 2025 payout announcement.
- More than 71,000 artists in 2024: Spotify for Artists says more than 71,000 artists generated at least $10,000 from Spotify alone in 2024. This does not mean each artist received that amount personally after contracts, expenses, or other deductions. Spotify for Artists’ royalties guide.
- More than $5 billion for independent artists and labels in 2024: This is also a Spotify-reported figure from the same guide; it describes that year’s overall activity, not the marginal result of the 2026 US change.
- A policy threshold for recorded-music royalties: Spotify says tracks needed at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to qualify for recorded-music royalties starting in 2024. Spotify’s 2023 explanation said this addressed about $40 million a year in small payments it said were not reaching uploaders. Publishing royalties are calculated separately. That policy explanation does not identify beneficiaries of the later price increase. Spotify for Artists’ royalties guide.
What subscribers can do if the new rate is not worth it
Use Spotify’s account notice to confirm when the change applies, then compare the choices that are actually available to you. Spotify’s support information points to eligible Premium plan options and its free ad-supported service; prices and eligibility do not make those options equivalent in features. Check the account’s cancellation and plan details through Spotify Support and the US Premium page.
