There is no verified live shortlist here of the best laptops currently on sale for £500 or less in the UK. Prices and stock change, and a model that fits the budget in one configuration may exceed it in another. Before buying, check the exact model’s processor, memory, storage, screen and operating system, then confirm its price and availability with the retailer.

For everyday documents, browsing, streaming and light multitasking, a Windows laptop with 8GB of RAM and an SSD is a sensible starting point. A Chromebook may cost less if its apps and internet-dependent workflow suit you. Neither category is a good default for demanding games or professional creative work.

How to choose a laptop under £500

Compare complete configurations, not just product-family names. A laptop line can include versions with different processors, memory, storage and screens, and those differences affect both usefulness and price. Which? notes that buyers in this bracket may find Core i3 and sometimes Core i5 processors, SSDs and Full HD displays. It also advises that 8GB of RAM is more likely than 4GB to avoid slowdowns in Windows, as long as you do not overload the laptop with apps and browser tabs. Which?’s budget-laptop advice also cautions that prices fluctuate and that sub-£500 Best Buy models are relatively uncommon.

  • Processor: Check the exact chip and generation. A family label alone does not tell you which configuration you are buying.
  • Memory: For Windows, use 8GB as a practical minimum target; 4GB can be limiting when several applications or tabs are open.
  • Storage: Check capacity and type. An SSD is preferable for everyday responsiveness; Chromebooks may use eMMC storage, which is not the same as an SSD.
  • Display: Look for the stated size and resolution. Full HD is a useful target for clearer text and video.
  • Operating system: Choose Windows or ChromeOS based on the applications and offline tasks you actually need.
  • Price and stock: Verify the precise UK configuration and total price on the day you buy.

Windows or Chromebook: choose for your software

A Chromebook runs ChromeOS and is generally aimed at connected, cloud-oriented use. It can be a lower-cost fit for web browsing, streaming and work done in compatible web apps. Before buying one, check that your required applications are available and that you can complete essential tasks offline. App selection, some editing software and limited internal storage can make a Chromebook unsuitable for particular workflows.

  • Lightweight & Secure Design – Weighs just 3.35 lb with a sleek modern grey finish and vertical brushed keyboard deck; 564GB Storage(500GB EXT HDD) for essential files and apps; H1 secure microcontroller provides enhanced security for your data and online activities

Windows is usually the safer choice when you need specific desktop software or broader compatibility, but a low-cost Windows laptop with only 4GB of RAM may feel constrained. Check the requirements of your essential apps rather than assuming that every Windows laptop will handle them well.

Match screen size and performance to how you will use it

A larger display can be more comfortable for extended sessions, but it makes the laptop less convenient to carry. A smaller model is easier to transport, though its screen may feel cramped for long work sessions. HP’s buying guidance discusses this trade-off and says its under-£500 range does not cover a new laptop with dedicated graphics for hardcore gaming or professional animation. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance test. For demanding games or professional creative workloads, plan on a higher budget or a machine with a suitable dedicated GPU.

Examples of configurations to assess, not current picks

HP’s UK page has named the following models as examples of sub-£500 options. Their inclusion does not establish that they are still available, currently cost £500 or less, or represent the best purchases in October 2026. Treat the specifications as a checklist for comparing a live listing, not as a ranked recommendation. HP’s under-£500 guide is a manufacturer source, not an independent test.

Example model Listed configuration What to check before buying
HP 17-cp0031na 17.3-inch Full HD; Ryzen 3 5300U; 8GB RAM; 512GB SSD Confirm the listing matches this configuration and that the larger screen suits your portability needs.
HP Pavilion 15-eg0032n 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen; 11th-generation Core i3; 8GB RAM; 256GB SSD Check exact processor, storage and price; do not assume every Pavilion 15 has these specifications.
HP 14s-fq1000na Full HD; Ryzen 5 5500U; 8GB RAM; 256GB SSD Confirm screen size and the complete configuration on the retailer’s listing.
HP Pavilion x360 14-dy0002na Pentium Gold 7505; 4GB RAM; 128GB SSD Its listed 4GB of RAM is below the 8GB target for Windows; consider whether that trade-off fits your workload.
HP Chromebook 14a-na0005na Pentium Silver N5030; 8GB RAM; 128GB eMMC Verify app and offline compatibility, and whether the internal storage is enough for your files.

These configurations are examples cited by HP; current UK price and stock were not established. HP’s product specifications and guidance are not independent test results. Tom’s Guide says the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x may be worth considering if found below £500, but that conditional suggestion does not establish a UK listing at the threshold. Its laptop roundup also places its central Windows and Chromebook recommendations in higher price bands.

Check the real cost before you commit

  1. Open the exact product listing. Confirm the full model code and compare the processor, RAM, storage, screen size and resolution with the configuration you want.
  2. Check the operating system and your must-have apps. For ChromeOS, verify app availability and offline access before relying on it for work or study.
  3. Confirm the price and stock. Check that the specific configuration is available at £500 or less from the retailer, rather than relying on an old deal or a page showing a different version.
  4. Review storage needs. If the laptop’s internal drive is too small, an external hard drive is one possible way to store extra files, as HP notes; it does not replace checking that the laptop itself meets your needs.

Which? names Currys, John Lewis and Laptops Direct as UK sources for budget laptops, but that does not confirm current stock of the examples above. Its page says, “Due to the fluctuating nature of prices, some prices might rise above £500 occasionally.” A deal mentioned by TechRadar was tied to Amazon Tech Week on April 24, 2026, so it should not be treated as evidence of an October price or live offer. TechRadar’s April 2026 deal coverage is time-specific.

What the available recommendations do—and do not—establish

Which? says it buys every laptop it tests and its lab tests more than 100 laptops per year, but its detailed current rankings are member-gated in the visible page text. That information describes its testing process; it does not identify a verified current sub-£500 winner. The available editorial examples likewise do not confirm a definitive UK shortlist at this price. Check current listings before treating any named model as a recommendation.
