Nissan announced on September 16, 2025, that it would wind down its design studios in San Diego and São Paulo, while downsizing operations in London and Japan. The changes are part of Re:Nissan, the company’s recovery plan; Nissan said the design reorganization was to be completed by the end of FY2025. That was the announced timetable, not confirmation that every transition was completed.

Which Nissan design studios are closing?

Nissan said two locations would wind down: Nissan Design America in San Diego and Nissan Design Latin America in São Paulo. The company said their design activity and programs would transfer to other studios. London and Japan operations would also be downsized, but Nissan did not describe those changes as full studio closures. Nissan’s September 16, 2025 announcement set the plan.

Location Announced action Planned role or transition
San Diego, United States Wind down Nissan Design America Activities and programs to transfer to other studios
São Paulo, Brazil Wind down Nissan Design Latin America Activities and programs to transfer to other studios
London, United Kingdom Downsize operations; not announced as a full closure Nissan Design Europe to support Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania, with collaboration including Renault
Japan Downsize operations; not announced as a full closure Atsugi and Tokyo remain among Nissan’s five core design hubs

What will Nissan’s five design hubs do?

Nissan identified five continuing hubs and assigned each a role in the new structure. These are the company’s stated intended functions, not an independent assessment of the studios’ work.

  • Atsugi, Japan — Nissan Global Design Center: lead studio for global markets and production execution hub.
  • Los Angeles — Studio Six: advanced creative studio and primary U.S. design hub.
  • London — Nissan Design Europe: support for Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania (AMIEO), including collaboration with Renault.
  • Shanghai — Nissan Design China: design work tailored to China.
  • Tokyo — The Creative Box Studio: experiential brand and lifestyle design.

Nissan’s global design executive Alfonso Albaisa described the intended model as “five agile hubs that harness new technologies and creative energy to deliver faster, smarter, and more connected design solutions.” That is Nissan’s description of the goal, not evidence that the reorganization has already achieved those results.

How does the studio realignment fit Re:Nissan?

Nissan presented the design changes as one part of Re:Nissan, its company-wide recovery plan in response to a challenging business environment and a high-cost structure. The plan’s targets are broader than design and should not be mistaken for savings or job cuts caused specifically by the studio changes.

In its May 13, 2025 plan announcement, Nissan set targets of 500 billion yen in total cost savings versus FY2024 actuals, 20,000 fewer employees, and a reduction from 17 plants to 10 by FY2027. Those are targets, not reported accomplishments. Nissan’s Re:Nissan overview says the company aims for positive automotive operating profit and positive free cash flow by FY2026, alongside cost reduction, product and market strategy, and partnerships. Nissan has not published a design-realignment-specific savings figure in the sources cited here.

How many design jobs will be affected?

Nissan did not disclose a job-impact figure for the design reorganization. Reuters reported that the number of affected design jobs was not stated; the company-wide Re:Nissan workforce target does not establish how many positions, if any, are tied to these particular studios. Reuters’ September 16, 2025 report covered the announcement and the undisclosed job impact.

Was the reorganization completed by the deadline?

Nissan announced that the realignment was to be completed by the end of FY2025. The sources cited here establish the plan and its deadline, but do not verify completion of every studio wind-down, downsizing, or program transfer. The deadline should therefore be read as Nissan’s timetable rather than proof of completion.
