South Korea can source LNG from a broad set of suppliers beyond Alaska, including Australia, Qatar, Oman, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia’s Sakhalin supply, Yemen, Egypt and the United States. It can also reduce the role of gas in electricity by expanding nuclear and renewable generation, supported by grid and storage investment. Those are different kinds of alternatives: one changes where Korea buys gas; the other may reduce how much gas it needs.
South Korea already buys LNG from multiple regions
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) says it imports LNG mainly from the Middle East—Qatar, Oman, Yemen and Egypt—Southeast Asia—Indonesia and Malaysia—Russia’s Sakhalin supply, Australia and the United States. Its company overview therefore describes established supplier routes that do not depend on Alaska. KOGAS’s supplier overview does not provide a current supplier-by-supplier import-share table, so these sources cannot be ranked by their share of Korean imports from that page alone.
Established sources named by KOGAS
- Australia: A named LNG source. KOGAS also lists interests in the GLNG project and Prelude FLNG.
- Qatar: A named supplier and project partner. In 2021, the Korean government announced a KOGAS contract with QatarEnergy for 2 million tons per year from 2025 through 2044. Republic of Korea Policy Briefing, 2021
- Oman: A named Middle Eastern source; KOGAS lists an interest in Oman LNG.
- Indonesia and Malaysia: Named Southeast Asian sources; KOGAS’s project portfolio includes Indonesia’s DSLNG project.
- Russia’s Sakhalin, Yemen and Egypt: Also named by KOGAS as sources. The available information does not establish that geopolitical conditions, sanctions, contract terms or cargo availability would permit an unconstrained increase from any of them.
- United States: KOGAS names the country as a supplier and says it has used vessels carrying U.S. LNG. That supports U.S.-origin LNG as an existing source category, but does not establish the availability of a particular Gulf Coast cargo or a future volume for a specific deal.
Project interests are not the same as cargoes available to buy
As of the end of 2025, KOGAS listed 18 resource-development projects across 10 countries. Its portfolio includes interests in Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Indonesia, Australia, Canada and Mozambique. KOGAS’s project portfolio shows investment connections, not necessarily a right to redirect LNG to Korea, a spot cargo on the market or a guaranteed delivery schedule. An equity interest should not be counted as a replacement purchase unless the relevant volume and delivery terms are established.
Canada and Mozambique, for example, appear in the portfolio through LNG Canada and Mozambique Coral FLNG. The cited portfolio information does not specify replacement volumes available to Korea from those projects or when they could be delivered.

Contracts show routes to diversify long-term supply
Two announced arrangements illustrate that Korean procurement can involve different suppliers and start dates. They are not proof of an Alaska purchase or a direct substitute for a particular Alaska project.
| Supplier or source | Announced volume and term | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| QatarEnergy | 2 million tons per year, 2025–2044 | A KOGAS supply contract announced by the Korean government in 2021. Announcement |
| TotalEnergies | 1 million tons per year for 10 years, starting at the end of 2027 | TotalEnergies said in a 2025 announcement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that KOGAS selected it in an international tender. SEC-filed announcement |
The contract volumes describe specific agreements, not spare capacity that can necessarily be reassigned to replace another purchase. The sources do not establish how much Alaska LNG South Korea might otherwise buy, if any, or whether these arrangements are interchangeable with a particular project.

U.S. LNG scale does not establish Korea-specific availability
The United States exported 11.9 billion cubic feet of LNG per day in 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 report; Australia and Qatar were the next two largest LNG exporters. EIA, 2025 This indicates the scale of global supply, not a volume that Korea can necessarily contract for or a delivered price. Similarly, U.S. market forecasts published by the International Trade Administration in 2025 are projections made at that time, not proof of final deliveries or a committed Alaska purchase. International Trade Administration, South Korea energy market summary
Nuclear and renewables can reduce gas demand, not supply LNG
South Korea’s 11th Electricity Supply Basic Plan points toward a power mix incorporating new nuclear plants, renewables, hydrogen and other zero-carbon sources, alongside grid and storage measures. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy described policy goals “such as stability, efficiency and carbon neutrality.” MOTIE, 2023 announcement This is a planning direction; it does not show that each option has already displaced LNG or quantify a one-for-one reduction in gas purchases.

- Supplier diversification answers where Korea might buy LNG.
- Changes to the electricity mix answer how Korea might need less gas for power generation.
- Grid and storage capacity support a power system with more variable renewables; they are not LNG suppliers themselves.
What is not established about an Alaska alternative
The available sources do not verify a binding South Korean commitment to buy LNG from Alaska, nor specify a potential Alaska volume or delivery schedule. They also do not provide comparable current landed prices or supplier-by-supplier spare capacity. Without those details, it is not possible to rank alternatives by cost or claim that a particular supplier can replace a defined Alaska volume. Any comparison would need to distinguish existing imports, signed contracts, projected supply and project investments—and account for contract terms, cargo availability, shipping and delivered price.
