10 Best Dirt Bikes to Buy in 2026: Picks by Riding Style

A dirt bike shortlist organized by riding style—not a universal ranking—with 2026 250F motocross candidates, trail and youth options, and an enduro pick.

There is no single dirt bike that is best for every rider: a motocross racer, a trail rider, a young beginner and an enduro rider need different machines. This U.S.-focused guide names 10 options by intended use, drawing on Dirt Rider’s 2026 250F comparison, Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 buyer guide and manufacturer information. It is a category-based shortlist, not an overall ranking: the available head-to-head test covers seven 250cc four-stroke motocross bikes, not every kind of dirt bike.

How to choose the right kind of dirt bike

Start with where you will ride, then narrow the choice by fit, experience and budget. Motocross bikes are made for closed-course tracks; trail bikes and cross-country/enduro models are configured for different terrain and riding needs. For example, Honda labels its CRF/R competition line for motocross and its CRF/F line for trail riding.

  • Motocross: Consider a motocross model if you expect to ride a closed course. The seven 250F options below were compared in a direct 2026 class test.
  • Trail riding: Look for a trail model and a size the rider can manage. A race-focused bike is not automatically the right choice for casual or family trail riding.
  • Cross-country or enduro: Check whether the model’s tuning and transmission suit the terrain. Yamaha describes its YZ250X as an enduro-oriented two-stroke with wide-ratio gearing for terrain from tight woods to fire roads.
  • Youth riding: Choose around the young rider’s size and experience, not the largest displacement available. Honda’s trail range includes models intended for different rider stages.

Before buying, confirm the fit in person, including seat reach and whether the rider can comfortably manage the controls and starting arrangement. Compare the same model year and price basis, and ask the dealer for the out-the-door total, including destination or freight charges, taxes, assembly and any local registration costs.

10 dirt bikes to consider by riding style

The first seven are 2026 250F motocross competitors in Dirt Rider’s comparison, published March 9, 2026. That test establishes a relevant comparison set, but the available information does not identify a single overall winner. Treat the models as candidates to compare for your own fit and priorities, not as a ranked podium. The remaining three are category alternatives for trail, youth and enduro use.

Motocross: the 2026 250F comparison field

  1. Honda CRF250R — A 250F motocross candidate in Dirt Rider’s seven-bike comparison. Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 buyer guide lists Showa suspension, Nissin brakes, a cable clutch and Pirelli tires. The guide lists a 2026 base price of $8,399; that is not a dealer quote or delivered price.
  2. KTM 250 SX-F — Another of the seven direct-comparison candidates. Dirt Bike Magazine lists a 2026 base price of $10,699, the highest among the four models in this list for which that guide’s price is specified. Check the same-year local quote before comparing costs.
  3. Yamaha YZ250F — Included in the 2026 250F comparison. Dirt Bike Magazine lists its 2026 base price at $8,899.
  4. GasGas MC 250F — Included in the same 2026 comparison. The cited buyer-guide price information does not state a 2026 base price for this model.
  5. Kawasaki KX250 — A 2026 comparison candidate. Dirt Bike Magazine lists a base price of $9,099 for the 2026 model. Kawasaki’s official KX250 page describes selectable power modes, traction-control settings and smartphone connectivity; check the model-year page and dealer for the exact equipment and price of the bike you are considering.
  6. Triumph TF 250-X — Included in the 2026 250F comparison. Dirt Bike Magazine lists a 2026 base price of $9,495.
  7. Husqvarna FC 250 — The seven-bike comparison includes the FC 250. The cited Dirt Bike Magazine guide supplies a 2026 base price for the Husqvarna TC250, a different model, not for the FC 250; do not use the TC250 figure as the FC 250 price.

Prices in this list are the 2026 base prices reported by Dirt Bike Magazine’s buyer guide, not necessarily current dealer prices. Its 2026 comparison field also does not include the Suzuki RM-Z250, so the shortlist does not imply that the seven tested bikes are the only motocross choices available.

Trail riding: Honda CRF300F

Honda CRF300F — A trail-bike option for riders looking beyond the youth models. Honda lists a 294cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, six-speed transmission and fuel injection. Its official page gives a $4,999 base MSRP and reports destination separately; the page’s total and the buyer’s local delivered cost can therefore differ from that base figure. Honda’s CRF/F line is positioned for trail riding, not as a motocross ranking.

  • Dual Hydraulic Disc Brakes & Steel Frame** - Large front and rear brake discs deliver consistent stopping power in mud, water, and sand. Reinforced steel frame supports up to 265 lbs while maintaining agile handling.
  • TUV Certified & 1-Year Warranty** - Meets strict safety standards for electric bicycles. Easy assemble with tools included. US-based customer support and replacement parts available nationwide.

Youth riding: Honda CRF50F

Honda CRF50F — A youth trail-bike option to consider for a first bike. Honda describes it as an entry-level choice with an automatic clutch and kid-friendly controls. That manufacturer description is not a substitute for checking that the bike’s size and controls suit the actual rider; Honda does not establish an appropriate fit for every child through the model name alone.

Cross-country and enduro: Yamaha YZ250X

Yamaha YZ250X — Consider this model when the plan is cross-country or enduro riding rather than motocross. Yamaha identifies it as a 2026 cross-country/enduro machine with a 249cc two-stroke engine and wide-ratio five-speed transmission, and describes its tuning for Hare Scrambles/GNCC-style racing. The model’s intended use and gearing are why it belongs in a different category from the YZ250F motocross bike.

What the published prices do—and do not—tell you

Dirt Bike Magazine’s listed prices are 2026 base prices for the particular motocross models in its buyer guide. They are useful for an initial same-year comparison, but they are not evidence of a bike’s current availability, a dealer’s selling price or the amount you will pay to take it home. Honda’s official pages illustrate a separate issue: current CRF/R listings are for 2027 and distinguish base MSRP from destination charge, while the CRF300F page gives its own base and destination figures. Those different years and price bases should not be put side by side as though they were equivalent.

  • Ask the dealer to confirm the exact model year and whether that bike is in stock.
  • Request an itemized out-the-door quote, not just a base MSRP.
  • Check destination or freight, assembly, taxes and local registration requirements.
  • For a used bike, evaluate its condition and service history separately; the cited new-bike prices do not establish what a used example is worth.

Safety and fit are part of the purchase

Kawasaki’s official KX250 page advises riders to wear a helmet, eye protection and proper apparel. Match the bike to the terrain and rider, and get an in-person fit check before committing—especially when buying for a young or inexperienced rider. No model designation or published price establishes that a particular bike is safe or manageable for a particular person.
