SaaS Boilerplates: What They Are and How to Compare Your Options

A SaaS boilerplate can speed up common setup, but the right choice depends on your stack, account model, billing needs, license and deployment. Here’s how to compare options without mistaking marketing claims for a verified ranking.

A SaaS boilerplate is a reusable codebase that can provide a starting point for common product features such as authentication, billing, database access, admin tools and application structure. It can save setup work, but it is not a finished product—and the available evidence does not support a reliable, independently verified list of ten “best” kits. This guide explains what to compare and summarizes the options for which the cited material provides at least some concrete information.

What is a SaaS boilerplate?

A SaaS boilerplate is a starting codebase for building a software-as-a-service product. Depending on the kit, it may connect a web framework to features such as sign-in, payments, a database, team accounts and an admin area. The aim is to avoid rebuilding common foundations from scratch so you can focus more of your work on the product’s distinct features.

“Boilerplate,” “starter kit” and “starter” are overlapping vendor terms, not standardized product categories. A 2026 comparison describes a template as usually focused on the user interface and a boilerplate as including a working backend, but you should check what a particular product actually ships with rather than relying on its label.

A starter codebase does not supply a finished business or remove the need to understand the architecture you adopt. You remain responsible for shaping the product, validating its security and behavior, and maintaining the code as its dependencies and your requirements change.

How to compare SaaS boilerplates

Start with your product requirements, then verify the implementation and deployment instructions. A feature listed on a sales page is not proof that it fits your account model, payment flow or hosting setup.

  • Framework and runtime: Confirm the language, framework and runtime your team can maintain, and whether the starter supports the framework features your application needs.
  • Database and ORM: Check the supported database, schema and migration workflow, and whether the included ORM suits your deployment environment.
  • Authentication and authorization: Inspect sign-in methods, account recovery and role or permission handling. Authentication establishes identity; it does not automatically provide the authorization rules your product needs.
  • Billing: Verify the payment provider and the specific subscription, trial, cancellation, metering or entitlement flows you require. “Billing included” is not enough to establish support for your business model.
  • Teams and tenancy: Determine whether accounts are individual or organization-based, how teams and tenant data are separated, and whether roles and permissions match your use case. A teams feature alone does not establish that a kit has the depth of multi-tenancy your product requires.
  • Admin tools: Check which administrative tasks are supported and how access is protected.
  • Deployment: Follow the published setup instructions far enough to confirm that the kit works with your intended hosting target and its required services.
  • License, updates and total cost: Read the license, check repository activity where applicable, and account for the purchase price as well as any services or ongoing maintenance your implementation requires. A lifetime-access offer describes access terms, not a guarantee of future updates.

Four named options, with evidence limits

The table is a shortlist, not a ranking. It combines official product or repository descriptions with products named in a vendor-published comparison. Those descriptions are not independent audits, and the available material does not establish equally detailed profiles for all four entries.

Option What the available source says What to verify before choosing
MakerKit Its official product page describes a multi-tenant starter with authentication, billing, teams and super-admin features, with Supabase, Drizzle or Prisma stack choices. On October 5, 2026, the page listed lifetime prices of $349 for Pro and $649 for Teams. Confirm the current price, included features, chosen stack’s deployment requirements, and whether the tenancy and billing implementations fit your product.
supastarter Its official product page positions it as a SaaS starter for Next.js and other frameworks, describes an AI-ready codebase and advertises lifetime access. The reviewed material does not establish an exact price. Check the current framework support, detailed feature list, license and access or update terms. Marketing positioning alone does not establish that it is superior for a particular project.
OpenStarterKit Its repository describes a Next.js starter with Better Auth, Stripe, an admin/dashboard, email, internationalization and an MIT license. These are maintainer descriptions, not an independent audit. Inspect the current repository, license, dependencies, deployment instructions and activity, and verify that the described features work as your product requires.
Shipkit Named in a July 26, 2026 comparison that includes framework, price, authentication and database as comparison fields. The comparison’s publisher disclosed that it built Shipkit. Use the comparison as a discovery lead, then verify current product details with Shipkit’s own documentation. The available material does not establish an independently verified product profile here.

The July 26, 2026 comparison also names ShipFast and Open SaaS, but the available material does not provide enough product-specific detail to assess either consistently alongside the options above. A separate roundup published August 6, 2026 discusses more than 15 options, while its author discloses maintaining one of the products covered. These vendor-linked comparisons can help surface candidates; their rankings and performance claims should not be treated as neutral proof of which kit is best.

Because the available sources do not establish ten options against a consistent set of criteria, expanding this list to ten would imply a level of verification that is not supported. Treat the named products as starting points for your own checks, not as a definitive top-ten ranking.

How to decide which starter fits

  1. Write down your constraints. Specify your framework and hosting target, database, account model, required payment flows and license requirements before comparing products.
  2. Check the product’s primary materials. Use its official documentation or repository to confirm current features, pricing, license and setup requirements. Treat comparison articles as ways to find candidates, especially when their authors disclose a connection to a product.
  3. Trace a critical user flow. Review how a new customer signs up, receives the right access, pays or changes a subscription, and—if applicable—invites teammates. Look for implementation details and instructions, not just feature names.
  4. Assess the code you would inherit. Review its structure, dependencies, migration approach and update history. If you cannot explain how a critical part works, account for the learning and maintenance burden before adopting it.
  5. Compare the whole cost and exit path. Check the current purchase and access terms, required third-party services, license obligations and what it would take to replace or modify a key component later.

When a boilerplate is—and is not—a good fit

A starter is most useful when its architecture and included features closely match the product you intend to build. Reusing a compatible foundation can reduce repeated setup; choosing one with the wrong tenancy model, payment flow or deployment assumptions can instead leave you adapting code that does not fit.

If your requirements are unusual, or your team already has a mature internal foundation, compare the cost of adopting and maintaining a starter with building only the pieces you need. The label “SaaS boilerplate” does not tell you which approach will be cheaper or safer for your project; that depends on the code and your requirements.
