A 27th payday can happen when a fixed every-other-week payroll schedule puts 27 pay dates in one calendar year. It does not automatically mean a bonus, a smaller paycheck, or a change to your annual salary: your employer’s pay and deduction policies determine what happens. First confirm that you are paid biweekly rather than twice a month, then check how your employer treats salary, withholding, benefits and other deductions.
Why a biweekly year sometimes has 27 paydays
Biweekly pay means a payday every 14 days. Because a calendar year is slightly longer than 26 two-week cycles, the scheduled dates gradually shift against the calendar. In some years, 27 scheduled biweekly paydays fall within the calendar year. That is a calendar alignment issue, not an extra day or work period added to every employer’s payroll.
The Oregon Department of Administrative Services says 27 biweekly paydays occur about every 11 years, with occasional 12-year intervals depending on calendar alignment. Its explanation concerns pay dates in a calendar year; your employer’s actual schedule determines which dates apply to you. Oregon DAS payroll FAQ
Does a 27th payday mean an extra paycheck?
You may receive 27 checks in the calendar year, but whether that amounts to extra compensation depends on how your pay is defined. A check is a payment on a date; it may cover work performed in an earlier pay period. The calendar-year count of checks is not, by itself, a new salary rule.

#1 Best Overall
If you are paid hourly
An hourly employee is generally paid for hours worked during each covered pay period. If the employer’s biweekly schedule has 27 pay dates in the year, a check may simply pay for the additional scheduled period. Check the dates and work period covered by each statement rather than assuming the 27th check is a bonus.
If you are salaried
Employers can handle salary differently. A fixed biweekly amount may remain the same even when there are 27 pay dates; another arrangement may divide an annual salary across the scheduled checks or specify compensation another way. The cited official examples demonstrate that policies vary, but do not determine the terms of your own employment.

For example, Oregon says it keeps the biweekly amount constant, so state employees receive more than the stated annual compensation amount in a 27-payday year. Federal pay administration also accounts for 26 or 27 pay dates in some calculations. Neither example creates a universal rule for private employers. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management notes, “There are usually 26 pay dates each year,” in its federal pay guidance. OPM pay-administration guidance
First check whether you are paid biweekly or semi-monthly
| Schedule | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Biweekly | Payday every 14 days; the number of pay dates in a calendar year can vary. | Your employer’s calendar and the work period each check covers. |
| Semi-monthly | Pay twice a month; the schedule is tied to dates in the month rather than a repeating 14-day cycle. | The stated pay dates and how annual salary is divided between checks. |
Do not assume that an employer’s 27-payday notice applies to every employee. Microsoft’s 2026 employee FAQ, for instance, describes an extra payday for hourly employees on a biweekly schedule, not salaried employees on a semi-monthly schedule. That is Microsoft’s policy example, not a general payroll rule. Microsoft employee FAQ

Why your gross pay, taxes or deductions may look different
Gross compensation policy, tax withholding and deductions are separate questions. IRS Publication 15-T (2026) provides federal income-tax withholding methods, including biweekly tables based on 26 pay periods. Those tables explain withholding calculations; they do not decide what your employer owes you in gross pay during a 27-payday year. IRS Publication 15-T (2026)
Other payroll items may also follow their own rules. Microsoft’s example applies some deductions to its 27th check, skips another recurring deduction, and continues vacation accrual based on 26 periods. Employers can set item-specific rules; that example is not a template for your workplace.

- Retirement contributions: Review your election and annual contribution limit, and ask whether payroll applies the same amount or percentage to the additional check.
- Paid-time-off accrual: Confirm whether accrual is calculated per pay period, by hours worked or under another employer rule.
How to find out what your employer will do
- Verify the schedule. Use your employer’s pay calendar or recent pay statements to confirm whether you are paid every 14 days or twice a month, and identify the dates that fall in the calendar year.
- Check your compensation terms. Look at your offer letter, employment contract or written payroll policy for an annual salary, a per-period rate, or an explanation of how checks are calculated.
- Compare the statement details. Note the gross amount, covered work dates, tax withholding and each deduction on the check you are questioning.
- Ask payroll or HR about each item. Ask how salary is treated in the 27-payday year and whether insurance, retirement contributions and leave accrual follow the same schedule or separate rules.
- Use tax guidance for tax questions. For a withholding estimate tailored to your circumstances, use the IRS estimator or consult a qualified tax professional rather than making a W-4 change based only on the number of paydays.
