A company spokesperson said the platform’s Terms of Service prohibit fundraisers for the legal defense of violent crimes and that donors had been refunded.
Why did GoFundMe remove the fundraisers?
In a December 10, 2024 report, The Independent quoted a GoFundMe spokesperson: “GoFundMe’s Terms of Service prohibit fundraisers for the legal defense of violent crimes. The fundraisers have been removed from our platform and all donors have been refunded.”
That is the company’s stated reason for the December 2024 removals. It should not be confused with a claim that Mangione had been convicted: contemporaneous coverage described him as a suspect or defendant, and the platform’s explanation concerned its fundraising rules.
How many GoFundMe pages were removed?
The exact total was not established in the contemporaneous reporting. The Independent said it was not immediately clear how many pages had been removed, so the supported description is “multiple,” not a definitive count. A December 15, 2024 Forbes report, citing NBC News, later said at least three GoFundMe fundraisers had been removed. That is a later, attributed minimum—not an exact total confirmed by GoFundMe.

Were donors refunded, and when would money arrive?
GoFundMe’s spokesperson said all donors to the removed fundraisers had been refunded. The contemporaneous report did not give a matter-specific schedule for when those refunds would appear in donors’ accounts.
GoFundMe’s current refund guidance says unexpected refunds can have several causes, including a fundraiser being deactivated, an unverifiable donation, missed organizer verification or transfer deadlines, a card-provider dispute, or an organizer donating to their own personal fundraiser. The Help Center gives a general 3–10 business day card-return window for certain automatic full refunds after an organizer fails to verify an account on time. That general guidance does not establish the timing of refunds in this case.

What do GoFundMe’s current rules say?
The historical explanation came from the spokesperson quoted in The Independent. GoFundMe’s current Terms of Service provide broader context: they list prohibited fundraising categories and reserve enforcement measures, including removing content and suspending or terminating accounts in specified circumstances. The current list includes fundraising for ransom, human trafficking or exploitation, vigilantism, bribes, or bounties. It should not be treated as a complete record of the specific policy basis GoFundMe applied to the Mangione fundraisers in 2024.

Yes. This was not one of the GoFundMe pages. The Guardian reported on December 16, 2024 that a separately hosted GiveSendGo campaign called “December 4th Legal Committee” had raised more than $125,000 as of that Monday morning, against a $200,000 goal. That is a dated snapshot of a different platform’s campaign, not a current balance or a GoFundMe total.
