1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a used-car buyer in Germany, the strongest evidence-backed shortlist is the VW Golf Sportsvan, VW T-Roc, Audi Q2, Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Audi A4/A5, BMW 3/4 Series, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLB, VW Passat, and VW Golf. That is not a ranked top ten: TÜV inspection results support several specific age groups, while ADAC breakdown data identifies other models at class level. Neither source proves that an individual car will be trouble-free or inexpensive to own.
What “reliable” means in this shortlist
The figures below concern cars inspected or assisted in Germany. TÜV Report 2026 analyzes 9.5 million periodic vehicle inspections conducted from July 2024 through June 2025; 21.5% of the inspected vehicles had significant or dangerous defects. Its model and age-group figures are rates of significant defects found at inspection, not breakdown probabilities or repair-cost estimates. TÜV Report 2026
ADAC’s 2026 breakdown report uses a different measure: roadside breakdown callouts. It names reliable candidates by vehicle class and covers first-registration years through 2023, so its list does not establish results for later model years. ADAC breakdown report: model findings The two kinds of evidence should not be treated as interchangeable or used to rank the cars against one another.
Ten used German cars to consider
These ten choices balance specific TÜV age-band results with ADAC class-level breakdown findings. The evidence is strongest for the first four models, which have named TÜV rates for defined ages. The remaining entries are ADAC class-level candidates rather than recommendations for every year, engine or transmission.

- Used Book in Good Condition
1. VW Golf Sportsvan — four to seven years old
The Golf Sportsvan recorded a 4.0% significant-defect rate in TÜV’s four- to five-year group and 6.9% in its six- to seven-year group. Those rates were below the respective age-group averages of 10.0% and 13.6%. This is the clearest age-specific evidence here for a practical compact MPV; it does not establish the condition of a particular car or its future running costs. TÜV Report 2026 age-group figures
2. VW T-Roc — four to seven years old
The T-Roc matched the Golf Sportsvan at 4.0% in the four- to five-year group and recorded 6.7% in the six- to seven-year group, compared with group averages of 10.0% and 13.6%. TÜV also names the T-Roc as the two- to three-year SUV class leader, but that newer-car result may be less relevant if you are specifically seeking an older used vehicle. These are inspection outcomes, not proof that every engine or trim performs alike. TÜV Report 2026 age-group figures TÜV Report 2026
3. Audi Q2 — four to seven years old
The Q2’s significant-defect rate was 4.5% for four- to five-year-old cars and 7.5% for six- to seven-year-old cars, both below the corresponding TÜV group averages. ADAC also includes the Q2 among lower-mid-size breakdown candidates. The TÜV figures give a more specific age reference; the ADAC finding is class-level and limited to the report’s represented registration years. 4. Mercedes-Benz B-Class — ten to eleven years old
For ten- to eleven-year-old vehicles, the B-Class recorded a 13.9% significant-defect rate against a 22.9% average for that TÜV age group. TÜV also lists the B-Class among the two- to three-year van class leaders, but that newer cohort is not a substitute for evidence about a specific older car. 5. Audi A4/A5 — ADAC mid-size candidates
ADAC names the A4 and A5 among reliable models in its mid-size class. The report does not provide a model-year-specific breakdown rate in the findings summarized here, so use this as a shortlist prompt rather than a guarantee or a comparison with the TÜV percentages above. ADAC breakdown report: model findings
6. BMW 3 Series/4 Series — ADAC mid-size candidates
The BMW 3 Series and 4 Series appear in ADAC’s mid-size-class reliable-model list. The finding is class-level, with represented first-registration years through 2023; it does not establish that all generations or powertrains have the same breakdown record. ADAC breakdown report: model findings
Rank #3
7. BMW X3 — ADAC mid-size candidate
ADAC includes the X3 in its mid-size-class list of reliable models. That is useful breakdown evidence for considering the model, but the source finding does not give a model-specific rate here or speak to repair bills and inspection defects. ADAC breakdown report: model findings
8. Mercedes-Benz GLB — ADAC mid-size candidate
The GLB is another model ADAC identifies in the mid-size class. As with the other ADAC-only entries, the evidence is a class-level breakdown finding rather than a TÜV age-band result or a verdict on a particular vehicle. ADAC breakdown report: model findings

ADAC lists the Passat among reliable mid-size-class models. The report’s newest represented first-registration year is 2023, and this finding does not establish reliability for later cars, every engine or transmission, or ownership cost. ADAC breakdown report: model findings

10. VW Golf — ADAC lower-mid-size candidate
ADAC includes the Golf in its lower-mid-size class list. TÜV separately names the Golf among the two- to three-year class leaders, but that newer-car cohort should not be mistaken for an age-specific result on older used examples. ADAC breakdown report: model findings TÜV Report 2026
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the candidates
Start with your real use: a Golf Sportsvan or B-Class may suit a buyer prioritizing a taller, more versatile body, while the T-Roc, Q2 and X3 are SUV options; the A4/A5, 3/4 Series and Passat offer other body-style choices. Those descriptions are practical categories, not reliability rankings. Match the shortlist to the car’s age and the evidence available for that cohort rather than treating the ten models as interchangeable.
Do not infer a total-cost winner from inspection or breakdown data. The evidence here does not compare purchase prices, repair bills, fuel use, or specific engine and transmission failure patterns. A low defect rate cannot answer whether a particular engine variant is a good fit or whether a car has been maintained well.

What to check before buying a used Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen
- Read the inspection documents. Confirm the date and results of the latest periodic inspection, and look for recurring advisories or repairs rather than relying on the model average.
- Verify service records. Check that the history is coherent for the car’s age and mileage, and confirm the exact engine, transmission and specification against the records.
- Check mileage consistency and condition. Compare recorded mileage across available documents and assess whether wear and condition appear consistent with the claimed use.
- Arrange an independent inspection where appropriate. A qualified independent inspection can assess the specific car; model-level statistics cannot diagnose hidden damage or neglected maintenance.
- Budget for the individual vehicle, not the badge. Obtain a quote or specialist assessment for any identified work before committing. These sources do not establish model-specific repair-cost comparisons.
Why breakdown statistics are not a full ownership verdict
ADAC reports that the 12-volt starter battery caused 45.4% of roadside breakdowns in 2025. That illustrates how a breakdown count can reflect components beyond major engine or transmission failures; it does not mean that 45.4% of owners had a battery failure or that the listed models share that rate. ADAC 2026 breakdown report: causes
ADAC roadside assistance chief Thomas Reynartz said, “Da das durchschnittliche Alter der Fahrzeuge in Deutschland aber weiter steigt, bleiben unsere Pannenhelfer stark gefordert.” In English: “As the average age of vehicles in Germany continues to rise, our roadside assistance teams remain heavily in demand.” The English sentence is a translation of Reynartz’s German statement. Where to find model-by-model TÜV detail
The Auto Bild TÜV-Report 2026 is a German used-car guide covering 216 models with profiles and age-group results. TÜV Rheinland said it became available on November 20, 2025. It may help buyers compare inspection data in greater depth, but it is not a substitute for checking the documents and condition of the car they are considering. TÜV Rheinland: TÜV-Report 2026
