A History of easyJet: From Two Routes to European Scale

easyJet began flying from London Luton in 1995, initially serving Glasgow and Edinburgh. Three decades later, the company reported 355 aircraft and 1,207 routes across 38 countries as of 31 March 2025. Its growth story is not just a sequence of fleet and passenger milestones: easyJet says its low-fare model relies on point-to-point flying, operational efficiency, standardized aircraft and separately priced extras.

When did easyJet start, and what were its first routes?

easyJet was founded in 1995 by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, according to the company’s FY2025 annual report. It began operations from London Luton with flights to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The airline’s 30th-birthday announcement identifies its first flight as EZY121 from Luton to Glasgow on 10 November 1995. easyJet’s company timeline and its 30th-anniversary announcement provide the company’s account of those beginnings.

Which milestones marked easyJet’s expansion?

easyJet’s timeline highlights a shift from establishing its operation to reaching greater scale. These are selected milestones from the company’s history, not a complete chronology.

Year Company-reported milestone
1995 Founded, with flights from Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh; the first flight was Luton–Glasgow on 10 November.
1998 Online bookings began through easyJet.com.
2000 Flotation on the London Stock Exchange.
2005 Reached a fleet of 100 aircraft and carried its 100 millionth passenger.
2011 Carried 50 million passengers in a year for the first time.

The milestones are reported in easyJet’s corporate timeline. The company’s 2025 anniversary announcement gives the listing a particular role in its account of growth. CEO Kenton Jarvis said: “Our listing on the London Stock Exchange was a pivotal moment in easyJet’s journey. It enabled us to grow from a disruptive start-up into one of Europe’s most loved airlines.” That is Jarvis’s characterization in easyJet’s announcement, not an independent assessment.

How did easyJet’s business model support growth?

easyJet describes itself as a low-cost European airline operating a point-to-point network: passengers generally travel between airports on direct routes rather than relying on the airline to connect them through a hub. The company says it combines low fares with operational efficiency and access to primary airports. Its business-model description identifies several mechanisms it uses to pursue that approach.

Standardized aircraft and high-density cabins

The company describes using a standardized, single-fleet-type approach and a high-density, single-class cabin. Standardization is part of its stated operating model; easyJet presents it as a way to support efficiency, but the corporate description does not independently establish the size of any resulting cost advantage.

Short turnarounds and aircraft utilization

easyJet says short turnarounds and high aircraft utilization are central to its model. Keeping aircraft in service for more of the operating day is intended to make productive use of the fleet, while point-to-point flying avoids making the network depend on connections through a hub.

Unbundled fares and ancillary revenue

The airline separates some options—such as baggage, seat selection and catering—from the basic fare. Its description also cites dynamic pricing of ancillary products and limited indirect distribution. This allows the airline to offer a low headline fare while charging separately for selected extras; passengers’ final costs therefore depend on the fare and options they choose.

What does easyJet say its priorities are now?

easyJet’s stated strategy focuses on four priorities: building Europe’s best network, strengthening revenue, delivering ease and reliability, and driving its low-cost model. The priorities connect the original emphasis on low fares and direct routes with ongoing attention to network reach, customer experience and revenue. They are the company’s own strategic aims, set out on its strategy page.

What has easyJet reported about emissions and lower-weight paint?

In its FY2025 annual report, easyJet said air travel contributes 2%–3% of global CO₂ emissions per year. That figure is the company’s reported estimate, not an independently validated comparison of easyJet’s emissions with those of other airlines.

The same report says easyJet trialled lower-weight paint on 38 aircraft. It projects that applying the paint across its fleet by 2030 would reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 4,095 tonnes. The 4,095-tonne figure is a company projection conditional on future fleetwide application, not a reduction already achieved across the fleet. See the FY2025 annual report for the company’s account.
