An internship application discussion can take several forms. Prepare by reviewing your application, connecting your experience to the role, practicing examples, and asking about expectations.

An internship application discussion may be a screening call, structured interview, informal conversation, or role-specific technical, case, or behavioral interview. The format depends on the employer and role, so prepare as if it is an interview: review your application, learn what the organization needs, practice examples that show your relevant skills, and bring a few thoughtful questions.

What an internship application discussion may involve

“Application discussion” is not a standard interview format. It could be an initial screen about basic fit and logistics, a structured interview with consistent questions, a conversational meeting, or an assessment focused on technical, case, or behavioral skills. The employer and position determine what is most likely; the University of Pennsylvania Career Services describes these formats in its interview guidance.

Because the invitation may not reveal which format to expect, check it for clues: the meeting length, who will attend, whether it is remote or in person, and whether the employer mentions an exercise or presentation. If those details are missing, it is reasonable to ask the contact what format the conversation will take and whether you should prepare anything specific.

How to prepare before the meeting

Review the role and your application

Reread the internship posting and the materials you submitted, including your resume, cover letter, and application answers. Be ready to explain your interests, choices, and relevant experience. Penn Career Services recommends researching the employer, its industry, and the type of role rather than relying on generic preparation: Getting Prepared for Internship and Job Interviews.

Connect your experience to what the employer needs

Learn what the organization does, what the team contributes, and which needs or skills the posting emphasizes. If interviewer names are available, review their professional roles and backgrounds to understand the context of the conversation—not to force a personal connection.

Prepare a brief introduction that connects your interests to this specific internship. Relevant evidence can come from coursework, class projects, paid work, volunteering, or student organizations; extensive prior employment is not a prerequisite. Cal State East Bay’s Career Empowerment Center notes that internship interview discussions often draw on academic experience and collegiate involvement in its internship interview question guidance.

Choose examples that demonstrate your skills

Prepare a few truthful examples that show skills the role calls for, such as teamwork, problem-solving, initiative, or learning from a challenge. For behavioral questions, practice organizing an answer around the situation, your task, the action you took, and the result. Penn Career Services identifies this STAR structure as a useful way to prepare behavioral answers.

Practice speaking your introduction and examples aloud once or twice. A career adviser or practice partner can help you notice where an answer is unclear or too long; Vassar’s internship application tips recommend arranging a mock interview.

Questions you can ask the employer

Choose a few questions that are not already answered in the posting or on the organization’s website. Questions about the work, learning goals, supervision, and hiring timeline can help you assess whether the opportunity fits your goals. For example:

  • What would an intern work on during a typical week?
  • What are the main goals for this internship?
  • What would a successful intern have accomplished by the end?
  • How are interns supervised and given feedback?
  • Which skills or experiences are most useful in this role?
  • What are the next steps and expected timeline after this discussion?

Use the meeting to learn about the employer’s needs and explain how you could contribute. Vassar recommends asking questions that show considered interest in the internship’s goals, while Penn Career Services frames an interview as a focused professional conversation in which both sides assess fit.

Compare the opportunity’s practical details

The discussion can also help you determine whether the internship works for you. Not every employer will cover every detail in an initial meeting, so ask about the items that matter to your decision and that are not already disclosed.

  • Responsibilities: What projects or recurring tasks would you handle?
  • Learning goals: What skills or knowledge should you develop?
  • Supervision and feedback: Who will guide your work, and how often will you receive feedback?
  • Schedule and work arrangement: What hours, dates, location, or remote expectations apply?
  • Compensation: Is the internship paid, and what compensation terms apply?

The University of Maryland University Career Center advises interns to clarify practical expectations and communicate learning goals with a supervisor in its internship preparation guidance.

Keep multiple applications organized

If you are applying to several internships, keep a record of each employer, role, application date, meeting details, follow-up, and next step. A simple spreadsheet can prevent you from mixing up organizations or forgetting a deadline. The University of Illinois Chicago Career Services page on internships also names Teal, Jobscan, and RippleMatch as digital application-tracking options; check each service’s current features before relying on it.

What internship experience can—and cannot—tell you

The University of Illinois Chicago reported in 2022 that students who complete paid internships receive nearly twice as many job offers as students with no internship experience, attributing the comparison to the NACE 2022 Student Survey. That figure is UIC’s report of the survey, not an independently verified result here, and it describes an association—not a guarantee that an internship or a particular interview preparation method will lead to a job offer.
