How NVIDIA Rode the AI Boom to Become the World’s Most Valuable Public Company

NVIDIA’s AI-related Data Center growth helped fuel a historic market-cap milestone, but market value is a moving valuation—not revenue, profit, or a permanent ranking.

NVIDIA’s rise to the top of the market-value rankings reflects investors’ high expectations for AI infrastructure—and the company’s rapid growth selling the computing systems behind it. At the November 20, 2024 close, NVIDIA’s market capitalization was $3.579 trillion, according to the Associated Press. That was a share-price snapshot, not a measure of revenue or profit, and the ranking can change as stock prices move.

What “most valuable public company” means

A company’s market capitalization, or market cap, is its share price multiplied by its outstanding shares. It is a measure of the stock market’s valuation of the company at a particular moment. It is not the amount of cash the company has, nor its annual sales or earnings.

The Associated Press reported that NVIDIA reached a $3.579 trillion market value at the November 20, 2024 close, topping the S&P 500 and regaining the No. 1 position from Apple earlier that week. Rankings based on market capitalization are not permanent: NVIDIA later briefly passed $4 trillion in early trading on July 9, 2025, but closed below that threshold that day, according to the Associated Press.

How AI demand translated into NVIDIA’s revenue

The operating story behind the valuation is especially visible in NVIDIA’s Data Center business, which sells computing and networking products used for accelerated computing and AI. In fiscal second quarter 2025, which ended July 28, 2024, NVIDIA reported $30.0 billion in total revenue, up 122% year over year, and $26.3 billion in Data Center revenue, up 154%. These are company-reported results for NVIDIA’s fiscal quarter, not the calendar quarter.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

NVIDIA attributed the growth to demand for data-center compute and networking for accelerated computing and AI solutions. In the company’s August 28, 2024 results release, founder and CEO Jensen Huang said: “NVIDIA achieved record revenues as global data centers are in full throttle to modernize the entire computing stack with accelerated computing and generative AI.” That is management’s explanation of the demand environment, rather than an independent assessment of the stock’s value.

The growth continued in a later reporting period: NVIDIA reported fiscal second quarter 2027 revenue of $96.2 billion and Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion, up 106% and 117% year over year, respectively. Those figures show continued expansion in the company’s AI-linked Data Center business; by themselves, they do not show what investors expected or whether the shares were fairly valued.

What could constrain that growth

NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2027 SEC filing identifies risks that could affect demand or the company’s ability to meet it. The company says production involves complex requirements and supply needs. It also describes the possibility of customer delays caused by data-center infrastructure or capital constraints, limited availability of land and power, and slower adoption than anticipated. These are risks NVIDIA disclosed, not predictions that any particular constraint will occur.

These qualifications matter because a strong revenue trend does not guarantee continued growth or a particular stock return. A market-cap ranking reflects the share price at a given time; operating results are one part of the information investors may consider, alongside expectations and risk.

Why the milestone is a snapshot, not a lasting title

The 2024 milestone captures how investors valued NVIDIA at that point in the AI buildout. Subsequent changes in the share price can move NVIDIA above or below other companies, even without a change to the historical November 2024 figure. For a current ranking, compare market capitalizations using a same-day market source; the dated milestones here do not establish which company is No. 1 today.
