The airline removed the aircraft from service for inspection and repair. Colombian officials’ preliminary account, reported at the time, said it appeared to have been struck while landing; the cause, exact timing and location of the damage, and any responsible party were not conclusively established in the available reports.
What happened to American Airlines Flight 923?
CBS News reported on February 24, 2026, that Flight 923 flew from Miami to Medellín on Sunday evening. After it landed, ground staff found a puncture extending through the aircraft’s right-hand aileron. CBS described an entry hole and damage at a likely exit point, while noting that it was unclear when or where the damage occurred. CBS News’ report
The aileron is a movable part of a wing used to control roll. The reports describe damage to that surface; they do not establish that the aircraft had a broader mechanical or design problem.
What did American Airlines say?
In a statement quoted by CBS News on February 24, 2026, American Airlines said: “Following a routine inspection, our teams identified a puncture to the exterior of one of our aircraft in Medellín, Colombia. The aircraft was immediately removed from service for further inspection and repair. We will work closely with all relevant authorities to investigate this incident.”

The airline reported no injuries or flight-related issues. It said the aircraft was taken out of service for further inspection and repair; the cited reports do not establish when repairs were completed or when the plane returned to service.
Was the aircraft hit by bullets?
Contemporary coverage described the damage as consistent with an apparent bullet strike, but that wording should not be treated as a final forensic finding. ABC News reported that Colombian officials’ preliminary investigation indicated the aircraft was struck while landing in Medellín. ABC also reported authorities were focusing on a criminal group, while emphasizing that nothing was conclusive. The reports do not identify a proven shooter or motive. ABC News’ report

What is confirmed about the investigation?
El Tiempo reported on February 25, 2026, that Colombia’s civil aviation authority, Aerocivil, said it had not received formal notification of the event from the operator, the TSA or the FAA at that time. That was a dated account of what Aerocivil had received as of then; it does not establish whether later contact or coordination occurred. El Tiempo’s report
The FAA’s public accident and incident statements page has no matching public item in the material reviewed. A missing public listing does not establish that the FAA did not investigate or coordinate privately. The available sources do not establish a final investigative determination, the exact place or time the damage occurred, or the aircraft’s repair and return-to-service status.
