Intel said it wanted the appointment to help improve execution, restore product leadership, advance its foundry strategy and begin rebuilding investor confidence. Those were goals, not results established by the announcement.
When did Lip-Bu Tan become Intel CEO?
Intel’s board selected Tan on March 10, according to the company’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Intel announced the appointment two days later, on March 12. Tan’s roles as CEO and director became effective March 18, 2025. Board chair Frank Yeary said the company had conducted a comprehensive search before making its choice.
Tan was not entirely new to Intel’s boardroom: he had served as an Intel director from September 2022 until August 2024. He rejoined the board when he became CEO. Intel’s appointment announcement and its SEC filing document the timing and board roles.
Who is Lip-Bu Tan?
Intel presented Tan as an experienced technology leader with deep semiconductor-industry experience. A key part of that background was his 19 years on the board of Cadence Design Systems, beginning with his appointment in 2004. After serving as Cadence CEO, he was its executive chairman from 2021 to 2023.

Intel’s SEC filing also cites his experience in emerging technologies, finance, investment, mergers and acquisitions, and public-company leadership. These are credentials Intel gave as context for its selection; the company’s materials do not provide a candidate-by-candidate comparison or establish that Tan was objectively the strongest candidate.
What did Intel expect its new CEO to do?
Intel described the job ahead in terms of four connected priorities: better execution, renewed product leadership, progress on its foundry strategy, and a start toward regaining investor confidence. Yeary also framed the customer-facing ambition as making Intel both a world-class products company and a world-class foundry. The announcement states the board’s expectations; it does not show that those aims were achieved.

In Intel’s March 12 announcement, interim executive chair Frank Yeary said: “Their discipline and focus have been a source of stability as we continue the work needed to deliver better execution, rebuild product leadership, advance our foundry strategy and begin to regain investor confidence.” The reference to “their” concerned Tan and other leaders described in the announcement.
What did Tan say about his approach?
Before taking office, Tan said: “Under my leadership, Intel will be an engineering-focused company.” He also wrote: “As I prepare to come on board, I believe we have a truly unique opportunity to remake our company at one of the most pivotal moments in its history.” Both statements expressed his intentions before his March 18 start date, rather than reporting subsequent outcomes. Intel published the message in its message to employees.

Why the appointment mattered to Intel
The fit Intel emphasized was between Tan’s semiconductor and public-company experience and a business facing demands around product execution and its foundry ambitions. His long Cadence board tenure and earlier Intel directorship gave the board relevant industry and company experience to point to. But the available appointment materials establish the rationale and priorities, not whether Intel later delivered on them or how investors ultimately responded.
