Re:

Why Nvidia Is Investing $4 Billion in Optics Suppliers Lumentum and Coherent

NVIDIA’s separate, nonexclusive deals with Lumentum and Coherent pair $2 billion investments in each supplier with purchase commitments and future capacity rights for AI data-center optics.

NVIDIA announced separate, multiyear, nonexclusive agreements with Lumentum and Coherent on March 2, 2026, committing to invest $2 billion in each. The agreements also include multibillion-dollar purchase commitments and access to future manufacturing capacity. The aim, as the companies describe it, is to strengthen the optical technology supply chain needed as AI data centers expand—not to launch a consumer product or guarantee a particular performance gain.

What did NVIDIA agree to with Lumentum and Coherent?

The two agreements share a broad structure, but their announcements describe different product emphases. The $4 billion combined investment is the arithmetic sum of two separately announced $2 billion investments; it is not a single joint transaction.

Agreement detail Lumentum Coherent
NVIDIA investment announced March 2, 2026 $2 billion $2 billion
Disclosed supply emphasis Advanced laser components Advanced laser and optical networking products
Capacity language Future capacity access rights, with U.S.-based manufacturing expansion and a new fab Future access and capacity rights, with U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities
Agreement Multiyear and nonexclusive Multiyear and nonexclusive

Each company’s announcement describes multibillion-dollar purchase commitments in addition to NVIDIA’s investment. Those commitments and the future capacity rights are separate agreement terms; the announcements do not establish that all the money involved is investment capital or that new capacity is already operating. Coherent’s announcement and NVIDIA and Lumentum’s announcement set out the terms.

Why do AI data centers need optics?

AI systems depend on moving information among processors, servers and networking equipment. Copper connections carry electrical signals, but distance, bandwidth and power constraints make optical links useful for some high-capacity connections as data centers grow. Optical links transmit information using light.

Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics

Silicon photonics brings optical functions together with semiconductor technology. Co-packaged optics places optical components close to switching silicon, with the goal of addressing growing data-center interconnection demands. Coherent’s regulatory filing describes five additional product families related to co-packaged optics: its March 2, 2026 Form 8-K exhibit.

The companies present these technologies as a way to support AI infrastructure at larger scale and improve data movement. That is the stated rationale for investing in supply and development—not evidence in the announcements of measured performance gains, energy savings or a winning architecture. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said in Coherent’s announcement, “With Coherent, NVIDIA is pioneering next-generation silicon photonics to enable AI infrastructure at unprecedented scale, speed and energy efficiency.” Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston described that company’s agreement as “our shared commitment to advancing the optics technologies that will power the next generation of AI infrastructure.”

Are the agreements exclusive?

No. Both agreements are described as nonexclusive, so the announcements do not say NVIDIA must rely only on Lumentum or Coherent. Coherent also says its agreement extends a 20-year relationship with NVIDIA. The wording differences between the two companies’ disclosures do not establish a difference in deal value, exclusivity or relative importance to NVIDIA. Coherent’s announcement describes the nonexclusive agreement and the prior relationship.

What has happened since the March announcement?

On June 16, 2026, NVIDIA reported that Coherent had broken ground on an expanded manufacturing building at its Sherman, Texas campus. NVIDIA says the site is intended to scale production. Coherent CEO Jim Anderson estimated that the facility could support more than 550 direct jobs at full capacity; that is a forward-looking estimate, not a current employment count. Anderson said, “AI runs on compute, but it scales on connectivity — and Sherman is where that connective tissue gets built.” NVIDIA’s account of the groundbreaking is a company report, not an independent audit of operating capacity.

That report also describes Coherent’s role in data-center networking, including lasers, transceivers and pluggable optical modules. NVIDIA says an external laser module is associated with its Spectrum-X Photonics and Quantum-X Photonics switches. This is an example of the products involved, not evidence that the planned expansion has already increased output or that future availability is assured.

NVIDIA announced a separate optical-connectivity and U.S. manufacturing partnership with Corning on May 6, 2026. Corning was not part of the March 2 Lumentum and Coherent agreements; its announcement provides additional context for NVIDIA’s interest in optical connectivity, but does not change the terms of those earlier deals. NVIDIA’s Corning announcement covers that separate partnership.

What the agreements mean for consumers and investors

These are business-to-business supply-chain arrangements, not a consumer hardware launch: the announcements identify no reader-purchasable product or consumer model. For investors, the headline investment figures are not a complete measure of the agreements’ financial effect. Purchase commitments, manufacturing investment, production timing and future demand are distinct factors, and the announcements do not quantify their ultimate effect on either supplier’s results.

Both companies’ announcements include forward-looking statements. New capacity, product availability, technical performance, market acceptance and expected benefits remain uncertain; announced plans should not be treated as delivered outcomes. See Coherent’s announcement and NVIDIA and Lumentum’s announcement for their respective disclosures.
