GamesBeat described the result as beating estimates, but its August 6, 2024 article did not identify an analyst consensus provider or give the estimated DAU figure. Roblox’s own earnings release reports the result but does not compare DAUs with analyst estimates. Roblox’s August 1, 2024 results release does show that revenue and bookings topped the company’s own prior-quarter guidance—a separate comparison.
What Roblox reported for Q2 2024
The quarter ended June 30, 2024 brought growth in users, engagement and financial results. Roblox’s SEC-filed release reported these year-over-year comparisons:
| Metric | Q2 2024 result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily active users (DAUs) | 79.5 million | Up 21% |
| Hours engaged | 17.4 billion | Up 24% |
| Revenue | $893.5 million | Up 31% |
| Bookings | $955.2 million | Up 22% |
| Average monthly unique payers | 16.5 million | Up 22% |
| Average bookings per DAU | $12.01 | Up 1% |
Roblox calls DAUs an average daily active-user measure. The figure should be read as the company’s reported metric, not as a count of independently verified unique people. Bookings are a non-GAAP measure, so they supplement rather than replace revenue and other GAAP results.
Did daily users beat estimates?
The headline claim needs a qualification. GamesBeat’s August 6, 2024 article characterized Roblox’s 79.5 million DAUs as beating estimates, but it did not state the estimate, identify who supplied it, or explain the comparison. The available official release likewise does not publish an analyst consensus for DAUs. Accordingly, the result is clear; a quantified analyst-surprise margin is not established by those sources. GamesBeat’s report is the source for the “beat estimates” characterization.

Do not confuse that claim with the company-guidance comparison. Roblox’s May 9, 2024 Q1 release set Q2 revenue guidance at $855 million to $880 million and bookings guidance at $870 million to $900 million. Q2 revenue of $893.5 million and bookings of $955.2 million both exceeded those ranges. These are comparisons with Roblox’s own guidance, not analyst consensus estimates. The Q1 release contains the prior-quarter ranges.
Growth came with a substantial net loss
Roblox reported a consolidated net loss of $207.2 million and a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $205.9 million. It generated $151.4 million in net cash from operating activities. The company also reported $111.6 million in free cash flow, compared with negative $95.5 million in Q2 2023.

Free cash flow, like bookings, is a non-GAAP measure. Roblox cautions readers not to consider these measures in isolation or as substitutes for GAAP financial measures. Its results release provides the company’s definitions and reconciliations.
An accounting estimate affected reported revenue
At the start of Q2, Roblox revised its estimated average payer life from 28 months to 27 months. Based on deferred revenue and deferred cost-of-revenue balances as of March 31, 2024, the change increased Q2 revenue by $58.9 million and cost of revenue by $12.4 million. This was an accounting estimate change; it did not alter the reported DAU measure.

What Roblox said about its next steps
In the results release, founder and CEO David Baszucki said the platform continued to attract users of all ages globally. He also said Roblox would keep investing in its core platform to help creators build better and safer experiences and reach more people. These are management’s statements about the company’s strategy, not independent assessments of platform safety or user demographics.

After Q2, Roblox’s August 1 release set full-year 2024 guidance of $3.49 billion to $3.54 billion in revenue and $4.18 billion to $4.23 billion in bookings. Those figures are the company’s updated outlook, not a guarantee of results. Because bookings are non-GAAP, they should be considered alongside—not instead of—GAAP financial measures.
