Microsoft reportedly set its Xbox gaming division a 30% “accountability margin” goal, and the division responded with price increases, product cancellations and thousands of job cuts, according to a Bloomberg report published October 23, 2025. The report links those actions to pressure to meet the target, but does not establish that the goal was the sole cause of each decision.
What Bloomberg reported
Bloomberg reporters Jason Schreier and Dina Bass said executives set an across-the-board 30% goal for Xbox gaming division “accountability margins” over the preceding two years. Bloomberg described “accountability margins” as Microsoft’s term for profit margins and attributed the account to people familiar with the business who spoke anonymously.
Bloomberg reported that Xbox responded to the target with product cancellations, price increases and thousands of job cuts. That is an attributed connection in the report, not confirmation that one internal target alone caused every price, staffing or product decision. The 30% figure is a reported goal—not a published, audited result showing that Xbox achieved it. Read Bloomberg’s report.
How the target compares with reported historical margins
A MobileSyrup summary of Bloomberg’s reporting put the wider game industry’s margins at 17% to 22% over recent years, and Xbox’s at 10% to 20% over the six years before the October 2025 report. It also cited a 12% profit margin for Microsoft’s gaming business during the first nine months of fiscal 2022, attributing that figure to court documents. These are historical reported figures, not current margin data; the comparison figures may not use identical accounting scopes. MobileSyrup’s summary and context.

What the reported response means for players and workers
For players, Bloomberg’s account connects the margin pressure to higher prices and canceled products, but does not identify the target as the exclusive explanation for any particular increase or cancellation. MobileSyrup reported that Xbox raised prices for console hardware, controllers and games in May 2025, and reported a Game Pass Ultimate increase in October 2025. The subscription report concerned Canada; those dated reports are not current price quotes. MobileSyrup’s May 2025 price report and its October 2025 Game Pass report.
For employees, the report describes thousands of job cuts as part of the division’s response. The available account does not establish which roles or teams were affected specifically because of the reported margin goal, so it would be misleading to treat the target as a complete explanation of the layoffs.

What is confirmed—and what remains attributed reporting
The central claim is Bloomberg’s account from unnamed sources: executives set the 30% target, and Xbox’s response included price increases, cancellations and job cuts. The cited material does not establish that the target was achieved, nor does it provide a verified on-record Microsoft or Xbox response to the goal. No fresh 2026 update to the target appears in the cited coverage.
