OpenAI’s Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026, and OpenAI said its API was scheduled to end on September 24, 2026. Disney later said it would not go ahead with a previously planned $1 billion investment in OpenAI. That was a conditional investment announcement—not a confirmed transfer of $1 billion that was later withdrawn—so the available evidence does not establish a completed deal or a “rug pull.”

Is Sora shutting down?

Yes. OpenAI’s Help Center says the Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026. It also listed September 24, 2026, as the scheduled end date for the Sora API; that date has now passed. OpenAI’s current instructions are at What to know about the Sora discontinuation.

OpenAI’s shutdown message, quoted by the Associated Press, told users: “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.” The service ending does not, by itself, establish that OpenAI has stopped all research related to video-generation models. OpenAI’s Sora 2 announcement also described the work as research toward systems that simulate the physical world, while its product pages now note that Sora is no longer available.

How to download your Sora videos

OpenAI directs users to its Sora sunset export flow and recommends exporting content as soon as possible. Its Help Center says data associated with Sora use will be permanently deleted after any final export window, if one is offered, has passed. Because the export process and any remaining availability can change, use OpenAI’s official export and discontinuation instructions rather than relying on older walkthroughs.

Did Disney actually invest $1 billion in OpenAI?

The public announcements establish a planned investment, not a completed $1 billion payment. On December 11, 2025, OpenAI announced that Disney would make a $1 billion equity investment and receive warrants to purchase additional equity. OpenAI said the transaction depended on definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions. Those conditions matter: an announced intention to invest is not proof that the investment closed.

Disney’s May 6, 2026, Q2 FY2026 earnings release then said it would not proceed with its previously planned investment after OpenAI chose to shut down Sora. The release stated: “As widely reported, OpenAI opted to shut down Sora, and as a result we will not proceed with our previously planned investment in the company.” Disney also said it continued to explore potential commercial opportunities with OpenAI and others. Read the statement in Disney’s Q2 FY2026 earnings release.

What was in the Disney–OpenAI agreement?

The investment was announced alongside a separate three-year licensing agreement. Under the announced license, Sora users could create short, user-prompted videos using more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. OpenAI also said Disney would become a major OpenAI customer. The licensing plan and the equity investment were related announcements, but they were distinct parts of the proposed relationship.

In the original announcement, Disney CEO Robert A. Iger described the intended collaboration this way: “The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.” OpenAI’s announcement outlined the terms and conditions; it did not establish that the investment had closed or that the planned license had been fully implemented. Was this a $1 billion “rug pull”?

“Rug pull” implies that money was taken or that a party deceptively abandoned a completed arrangement. The public statements cited here support a narrower account: Disney announced a planned, conditional investment; OpenAI later shut down Sora; and Disney then said it would not proceed with the planned investment. They do not establish that Disney transferred $1 billion, that OpenAI pulled back funds, or that either company acted deceptively. Calling it a rug pull as an established fact goes beyond what the announcements show.

Why did the deal fall through?

Disney explicitly connected its decision not to invest with OpenAI’s decision to shut down Sora. That is the stated reason for abandoning the planned investment. The available announcements do not give a more detailed account of the companies’ negotiations or identify a separate financial dispute.

The shutdown also came amid public concerns about synthetic media. The Associated Press reported criticism from advocacy groups, academics, and experts over nonconsensual imagery and realistic deepfakes. AP also reported that OpenAI restricted public-figure generations after objections from family estates and an actors’ union. Those concerns are relevant context, but the reporting cited here does not establish that they caused OpenAI to discontinue Sora.

Timeline: Sora and the planned investment

  • February 2024: OpenAI introduced the original Sora research model.
  • September 2025: OpenAI announced Sora 2 and a social iOS app, describing Sora 2 as a video-and-audio generation model with tools to create, remix, and discover videos.
  • December 11, 2025: OpenAI announced the three-year Disney licensing agreement and Disney’s planned $1 billion equity investment, subject to closing conditions.
  • March 2026: OpenAI announced that it was shutting down Sora. AP reported that Disney said it respected OpenAI’s decision to leave the video-generation business and shift priorities.
  • April 26, 2026: Sora’s web and app experiences ended, according to OpenAI’s Help Center.
  • May 6, 2026: Disney’s Q2 FY2026 earnings release said it would not proceed with the planned investment.
  • September 24, 2026: OpenAI’s stated scheduled end date for the Sora API.

What Sora’s shutdown means for users and creators

For former Sora users, the immediate practical issue is exporting any creations they still want to keep through OpenAI’s official sunset process. For creators and rights holders, the Disney announcement was a proposed route for licensed characters to appear in short AI-generated videos; the shutdown ended the consumer Sora experience before that plan could become an ongoing feature of the service. OpenAI’s Sora 2 announcement framed the product both as a creative tool and as research, so the end of the app should not be read as proof that all related technical research has ended.

OpenAI introduced Sora in 2024, then expanded the product into an app-based video-and-audio experience with Sora 2 in 2025. Its retrospective pages now identify Sora as unavailable. The record supports a discontinued product, an abandoned conditional investment plan, and unresolved questions about any broader commercial opportunities—not a confirmed $1 billion loss or a proven act of deception.
