Re:

Did the Cybertruck Lose 34% of Its Value in One Year?

A reported 34% Cybertruck loss came from one owner’s trade-in estimate, not a representative depreciation study. Here’s how to interpret it against current resale estimates and five-year models.

A reported Tesla trade-in estimate for one Cybertruck owner implied a 34% loss over roughly a year. Another owner’s estimate implied 39%. Those are striking examples, but they are not proof that Cybertrucks generally lose that much in their first year: they are individual estimates, not a representative sample, and the details needed to verify the calculations are unavailable.

What the 34% figure does—and does not—mean

InsideEVs reported two owner-submitted Tesla trade-in estimates that implied losses of 34% and 39% over roughly a year. The article’s source page is unavailable, so the owners’ exact starting prices, trims, mileage, vehicle condition, and calculation details cannot be confirmed. The figures should therefore be read as reported examples, not a one-year depreciation rate for the Cybertruck as a model.

A trade-in estimate is also not the same as a private-party resale estimate or a completed sale. A trade-in figure is an estimate of what a dealer might allow for a vehicle in a trade; a resale estimate targets a different transaction, while a completed sale records what a buyer actually paid. The reported owner estimates cannot be directly compared with other valuation figures unless the value type and vehicle details match.

What current valuation sources show

Kelley Blue Book’s page for the 2024 Cybertruck lists a $70,100 resale estimate and a $67,500 trade-in estimate. Its annual table also lists $82,235 for 2024, followed by 2025 estimates of $66,622 for resale and $61,758 for trade-in. The page does not establish that the 2024 figure was the actual purchase price for either owner in the InsideEVs report, so these numbers cannot verify the reported 34% or 39% losses.

Valuation shown on KBB’s 2024 Cybertruck page Amount What it represents
2024 annual-table value $82,235 Value listed for 2024; not verified as either owner’s purchase price
2025 resale estimate $66,622 KBB’s resale estimate for 2025
2025 trade-in estimate $61,758 KBB’s trade-in estimate for 2025
Current resale estimate $70,100 Estimate displayed on the page accessed in 2026
Current trade-in estimate $67,500 Estimate displayed on the page accessed in 2026

KBB says its annual depreciation estimate draws on similar vehicles and auction forecasts, and is not a guarantee of actual depreciation. It also identifies condition, mileage, and location as factors that can affect a vehicle’s value. The displayed figures are estimates, not guaranteed offers. Because the table’s values and the InsideEVs owner examples do not share verified starting prices, trims, mileage, conditions, valuation dates, or value types, they should not be combined into a single depreciation calculation.

How to read the five-year depreciation comparisons

iSeeCars displays an estimated 56.5% depreciation for the Cybertruck after five years, compared with 33.3% for pickups and 41.7% for all cars. These are modeled five-year estimates, not observed first-year losses and not a way to confirm what happened to either owner’s truck.

iSeeCars says it analyzed more than 15 million vehicles to estimate depreciation at 3, 5, 7, and 10 years. Its method compares new-car and used-car prices at each vehicle age and accounts for automaker and vehicle segment in a mathematical model. A model-based five-year comparison answers a different question from an individual trade-in estimate after roughly one year.

What broader resale and sales data can tell you

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value release projects that an average 2026 model-year vehicle will retain about 45% of its original value after five years. The projection uses KBB’s January/February 2026 guide and assumes average condition and 75,000 miles at the end of five years. It is broad context, not a Cybertruck-specific first-year benchmark. KBB notes that resale value varies with supply, demand, and current and projected market conditions.

Cox Automotive/KBB’s Q4 2025 EV sales report estimates Cybertruck sales at 4,140 in Q4 2025, compared with 12,991 in Q4 2024, a 68.1% year-over-year decline. The report gives 20,237 units year to date versus 38,965, a 48.1% decline. These are report-period sales estimates—not changes in used-vehicle values—and they do not establish the cause of any particular trade-in or resale estimate.

How to estimate your own Cybertruck’s value

For a useful comparison, keep the value type and vehicle details consistent. A single headline percentage does not tell you what your own truck is worth, because the result depends on the price you actually paid and the vehicle’s market and condition at the time of valuation.

  • Choose the transaction type. Compare trade-in estimates with other trade-in estimates, or resale estimates with comparable resale estimates. Do not treat either as a completed sale price.
  • Match the vehicle. Record model year and trim, purchase price, mileage, condition, and history. Note whether the purchase price includes fees or reflects discounts.
  • Use the same market and valuation date. Location and date can affect estimates; avoid comparing figures from different markets or periods as if they were simultaneous.
  • Check more than one current estimate. KBB offers resale and trade-in estimates and an offer tool, but estimates are not guaranteed offers. Use the exact vehicle details requested by the valuation service.
  • Calculate loss against your actual starting point. If you paid $P and receive an estimate of $V, the percentage loss is (P − V) ÷ P × 100. This calculation is meaningful only if P and V refer to compatible values and you clearly identify what the estimate represents.

KBB’s general suggestions for managing depreciation include limiting mileage, keeping the vehicle clean and protected, and performing regular maintenance. The source does not quantify the effect of any one step on Cybertruck resale value, so none should be treated as a guaranteed way to recover a particular amount.
