Which Cybertrucks are affected?
Tesla’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 25V-170, submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 18, 2025, covers 46,096 model-year 2024–2025 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. The filing is available from NHTSA’s recalls site; owners should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) there or with Tesla to confirm current status.

The 46,096 figure is the population covered by the recall, not the number of trucks known to have failed. Tesla estimated that 1% of the recalled vehicles had the defect. As of March 14, 2025, the company said it had identified 151 warranty claims that might relate to the condition. Those are dated figures from Tesla’s filing, not current totals.
What is the cant-rail defect?
The cant rail is an exterior trim assembly. It consists of an electrocoated steel stamping joined to a stainless-steel panel with structural adhesive, then attached to the vehicle with fasteners. In affected trucks, the stainless panel may delaminate at the adhesive joint and separate from the assembly.

A panel that comes loose while the vehicle is moving could become a road hazard for motorists behind it and raise the risk of a collision or injury. Tesla identified cabin noise or visibly loose or separating trim as possible warning signs. The recalled part is the cant-rail panel; it is not the separate sail-applique issue involved in a June 2024 recall.
What should owners do?
Check the VIN through NHTSA or contact Tesla to find out whether the recall remains open for your truck and how to arrange service. If the trim appears loose or is separating, contact Tesla promptly for guidance rather than trying to secure or replace it yourself. Tesla’s specified remedy is a manufacturer replacement, not a generic adhesive, trim kit, or DIY repair.

How is Tesla fixing the problem?
Tesla said it would replace the cant-rail assembly at no charge with a revised assembly designed to meet durability requirements. The new version uses a different structural adhesive that Tesla said was not prone to environmental embrittlement, plus a stud welded to the stainless panel and a nut that clamps the panel to the vehicle structure.
Tesla’s filing listed May 19, 2025, as the planned owner-notification date. That date is historical; a VIN check or direct contact with Tesla is the useful way to confirm what action is available for an individual vehicle now.

How large was this recall—and what does “biggest yet” mean?
At the time of March 2025 coverage, the campaign was described as Tesla’s largest Cybertruck recall to date and the eighth Cybertruck recall since customer deliveries began. The affected population was 46,096 trucks. Those descriptions are time-bound: later recalls have been reported, so they should not be read as a current all-time ranking.
Reuters reported that Tesla did not separately disclose Cybertruck deliveries and that, based on analyst estimates, the recalled vehicles represented a vast majority of Cybertrucks on the road. That helps explain the recall’s scale, but it does not mean every truck had a confirmed defect: Tesla’s own estimate was that 1% of the recalled population had the condition.

Did the recall cause Tesla shares to fall?
Reuters reported that Tesla shares ended marginally higher on the day the recall was announced. The recall nevertheless arrived during a difficult period for investor sentiment: Reuters said the shares had lost about half their value during 2025 amid competition, an aging model lineup, and backlash related to CEO Elon Musk’s government role. That broader decline should not be attributed to the cant-rail recall alone; the available reporting does not establish a standalone estimate of the recall’s effect on the share price.
The episode illustrates the difference between a product-safety event and the wider forces affecting a stock. A recall can renew questions about quality and reputation without being the cause of a same-day decline or a longer market downturn. Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions, told Reuters that recalls involving an entire production run of a physical item such as body panels draw attention to quality issues, and that reputations can be tarnished quickly.
