SMART goals translate a broad intention into a specific result, a way to measure it, a realistic commitment, a relevant reason, and a deadline. The 15 examples below are adaptable templates—not universal targets or promises that SMART wording guarantees success. Replace their numbers, dates, and routines with measures and timelines that fit your starting point and circumstances.
What does SMART mean?
SMART commonly stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Some guides use “Realistic” instead of “Relevant”; SAMHSA, for example, uses the former, while CDC, the Government of Canada, and Monash use the latter. Some frameworks also consider achievability and realism separately. The useful test is whether the goal is clear, trackable, feasible, connected to a priority, and dated—not which expansion wins.
- Specific: State who will do what and the intended result. For work, name the deliverable or responsibility where it matters.
- Measurable: Choose a quantity, quality standard, observable sign, or record that will show progress. If the goal describes improvement, identify the starting point.
- Achievable: Check the time, skills, workload, resources, and constraints available. Adjust the scope or deadline if the commitment is not plausible.
- Relevant: Explain why the result matters to your role, values, or wider priority. The Canadian public-service job aid connects workplace goals to duties and team or department objectives.
- Time-bound: Set a deadline. For a longer objective, divide it into smaller tasks with milestone dates.
How to write a SMART goal
- Write the result you want, rather than a vague aspiration or a list of habits.
- Clarify what will change, who is involved, and why the result matters.
- Choose evidence you can observe. If you want to improve something, note its current baseline before setting a target.
- Check whether the time, skills, workload, and resources make the commitment feasible.
- Add a deadline and, for a longer project, intermediate milestones.
- Read the sentence again. If it contains several distinct results, split it into separate goals.
A flexible drafting pattern is: “By [date], I will [observable result], measured by [metric or evidence], by doing [feasible action or cadence], because [relevant reason].” This is a practical synthesis of the SMART criteria, not an official quoted formula.

1. Work performance
Goal: By the end of Q2, I will reduce the average time to resolve routine support tickets from my current baseline to one business day, while keeping the team’s existing quality measure in range.
This pairs a starting point and target with a quality guardrail. Use a metric your team already tracks; do not assume faster resolution is an improvement if quality falls.
2. Project delivery
Goal: By 30 June, our project team will publish the client-ready launch plan, with a named owner and due date for each of its five workstreams.
The deliverable and deadline are explicit. Change the workstream count to match the actual project.

- DETAILED DAILY TO DO LIST: The page is divided into independent writing areas for Monday through Weekend. You can sort and record work assignments, study tasks and personal errands separately, so important schedules will not be forgotten or omitted.
- BUILT-IN HABIT TRACKER TABLE: Special grid area supports marking daily habit completion status, with columns for goal setting and weekly achievement statistics. It helps you intuitively track persistence progress without purchasing an extra separate habit journal.
- FLAT LAY SPIRAL BINDING: Double wire coil binding enables the planner to lie fully flat for smooth writing without flipping back. Compact lightweight body is easy to slip into backpacks and tote bags, suitable for office work, school study and travel arrangement.
13. Relationships

14. Work-life boundaries
Goal: For the next four workweeks, I will stop checking work messages after 7 p.m. on at least four weeknights and record exceptions required by my role.

A useful target distinguishes an output from a broader outcome. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s guidance makes this distinction in project planning: delivering presentations or installing materials is an output, while a change in participants or communities is an outcome. Completing the output does not, on its own, prove the wider change occurred.
- For a job search, count applications that meet your criteria rather than promising an offer.
- For workplace improvement, use a relevant baseline and an existing quality measure where available.
- For a team or community project, identify whether you are measuring a deliverable you control or an effect influenced by other people and conditions.
- For a complex objective, use smaller tasks and dated milestones rather than relying on one distant deadline.
SMART is a planning aid, not a guarantee. The official guidance cited here offers criteria and examples, but no verified statistic establishing that SMART wording itself causes people to achieve goals.
