To prepare for the PMP exam, start with PMI’s July 2026 Exam Content Outline, then study project scenarios across predictive, adaptive/agile, and hybrid approaches and practise explaining why an answer fits the situation. The current exam has 180 questions, a 240-minute time limit, and two 10-minute breaks. Its largest domain is Process, but People and Business Environment together account for 59% of the outline.

What changed in the current PMP exam?

PMI says the refreshed PMP exam launched in July 2026. Use the current exam information and its July 2026 Exam Content Outline as your study blueprint; older prep material may not reflect the current emphasis or structure.

The outline divides exam content across three domains:

Domain Share of exam items Preparation implication
People 33% Practise decisions involving teams, stakeholders, and engagement.
Process 41% Give this the largest share of your review time, while studying it in varied project contexts.
Business Environment 26% Do not treat this as a minor add-on: more than one quarter of the exam is assigned to it.

The outline also describes roughly 40% of items as predictive and the remaining 60% as adaptive/agile or hybrid. These approaches appear across the domains; agile and hybrid are not separate domains. PMI highlights AI, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, outcomes, value, and business impact as areas receiving greater attention. Treat them as scenario context and decision factors, not as additional exam sections.

How many questions are on the PMP exam, and how is it timed?

The current outline specifies 180 questions, including 10 unscored pretest questions, over 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. It includes single-response and multiple-response questions, drag-and-drop items, and practical or case-study-style questions. The exact mix of question types and project approaches may vary by exam form.

The breaks are part of a long testing session, so practise concentrating for sustained periods. PMI’s outline says that after reviewing responses and starting a break, you cannot return to the previous section. Check the current exam-day instructions for your chosen testing mode, since procedures can differ between a test center and online testing.

Check eligibility and the training rule before booking

PMI requires 35 hours of project-management training; an active CAPM certification also satisfies that training requirement. Education and project-experience pathways, audit details, and application timelines depend on the current rules. Confirm your circumstances with PMI’s eligibility information and the PMP Certification Handbook rather than relying on a summary.

PMI distinguishes self-paced training from live instructor-led training. Beginning 1 December 2026, live training will count toward the requirement only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, China Registered Education Provider, or eligible accredited academic program, including PMI Global Accreditation Center programs. Training completed before that date remains eligible under the requirements in force for it. If you plan to take live training on or after 1 December 2026, confirm the provider’s status before enrolling.

Choose study materials that match the July 2026 outline

Before paying for a course or book, check that it explicitly aligns with the July 2026 outline. PMI lists its exam-prep course, Study Hall, a practice exam, the Certification Handbook, and supplementary publications among its preparation resources. Availability and product versions can change; check PMI’s current exam preparation page.

  • Official outline and handbook: Use the outline to direct study and the handbook for application and exam policies.
  • Course: Compare self-paced and instructor-led formats, and verify whether the training meets your 35-hour requirement.
  • Practice questions: Look for scenario-based questions with explanations, not just answer keys, so you can review your reasoning.
  • Books and supplementary publications: Check that the edition and guidance you use fit the July 2026 exam. PMI practitioner advice mentions reading the PMBOK, but no single book is established as a guaranteed route to passing.

When comparing paid options, consider outline alignment, format, training-hour eligibility, scenario practice and explanation quality, and current price and membership terms. For live training on or after 1 December 2026, also check that the provider meets PMI’s stated eligibility rules.

Build a study plan around the exam’s actual demands

  1. Read the July 2026 outline first. Map its tasks and domain weights against what you already know. Use the weights to prioritize: Process has the largest share, while Business Environment warrants substantial attention.
  2. Study decisions in context. Work through predictive, adaptive/agile, and hybrid scenarios within all three domains. Practise identifying the project situation, the people affected, and the value or business impact of each possible action.
  3. Use practice questions to find gaps. After answering, review why the best response fits and why alternatives do not. Revisit weak topics rather than simply increasing the number of questions completed.
  4. Rehearse the full session. Practise focused work over a long period and understand the break and section boundaries described in the outline. This helps you get comfortable with the session structure without assuming you can revisit a section after beginning a break.
  5. Verify logistics before exam day. Review PMI’s current instructions for your selected online or test-center mode, and check the handbook for current retake and scheduling rules.

PMI’s certification page says candidates may take the exam up to three times in one year. Because retake rules are consequential and may change, confirm the current handbook before setting a retake plan. PMI does not establish a universal study-hour schedule or a guaranteed method to pass. Aisleigh McGann, PMP, a PMO Project Manager, has advised candidates to be determined, read the PMBOK, and do practice questions; that is practitioner advice published by PMI, not a passing guarantee.

What PMP certification statistics can—and cannot—tell you

PMI’s certification page displays figures of 17% higher median salaries for PMP-certified professionals than for those without certification, a $135,000 U.S. median salary for PMP-certified professionals, and more than 1.7 million PMP certification holders. The surfaced page does not show a publication year for these figures, so they should not be treated as a dated salary benchmark or independently verified current count. Salary outcomes vary, and the figures do not predict what an individual candidate will earn.
