Car Brands to Watch for U.S. Price Pressure After Tariffs

Mazda, Hyundai-Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota and Subaru stand out in early-2025 import-share forecasts. Those figures signal potential exposure, not confirmed price increases.

There is no verified list of exactly 12 car brands that will raise U.S. prices after tariffs. The strongest available screening evidence points to Mazda, Hyundai-Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota and Subaru as brands with relatively high projected import reliance—but those figures are early-2025 forecasts, not current sales data or price announcements. A tariff can raise an automaker’s costs without producing an equal or automatic increase in a vehicle’s sticker price.

Which car brands could face more tariff-related price pressure?

PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 light-vehicle forecast, estimated the following shares of U.S. brand sales would be supplied by imports. These are historical projections, not current realized import shares, tariff rates, or predictions of price increases.

Brand or group Projected share of U.S. sales supplied by imports How to read the figure
Mazda 81% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast Highest import-share estimate in this group; not a forecast of an 81% price increase.
Hyundai-Kia, combined 66% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast A combined group estimate, not separate figures for Hyundai and Kia.
Mercedes-Benz 58% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast Brand-level import exposure estimate; individual models can differ.
BMW 52% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast Brand-level import exposure estimate; individual models can differ.
Toyota 50% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast Does not distinguish models by assembly plant or parts origin.
Subaru 45% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast TrendForce’s April 2025 analysis said Subaru’s imports in its analysis came from Japan; that sourcing observation is also historical.
General Motors 42% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast This is a corporate-group estimate, not a separate figure for every GM marque.
Honda 40% in PwC Autofacts’ March 2025 analysis, based on S&P Global Mobility’s January 2025 forecast Brand-level import exposure estimate; individual models can differ.

The first six are reasonable brands to watch on the basis of the cited import-share screen. General Motors and Honda also appear in the forecast data, but the figures alone do not establish that any of these automakers will raise U.S. prices. They also do not support naming four more brands to complete a definitive 12-brand prediction. Which vehicles face pressure depends on model-level assembly, parts sourcing, applicable trade rules, and each company’s pricing decisions.

Will tariffs make cars cost more in the U.S.?

They can add costs, but a tariff is not a mandatory retail-price increase. The March 2025 White House automobile proclamation imposed a 25% tariff on covered imported automobiles, subject to applicable exceptions and trade rules. That does not mean every vehicle sold in the U.S. received a 25% cost increase: coverage depends on the vehicle and its treatment under the rules, and an automaker can absorb, offset, or pass through costs in different ways.

Even when a vehicle is assembled in the United States, imported parts can matter. The Commerce Department’s application process calls for production forecasts by make, model and plant, along with MSRP, projected parts-tariff costs and importer details. That model-and-supply-chain approach is why a brand’s home country—or a simple imported-versus-domestic label—is not enough to determine a particular vehicle’s exposure.

What U.S. assembly offsets do—and do not—mean

An April 2025 White House amendment described an import adjustment offset for qualifying parts used in U.S.-assembled vehicles. Under its schedule, the offset amount was equal to 3.75% of aggregate MSRP for eligible vehicles assembled from April 3, 2025 through April 30, 2026, and 2.5% for eligible vehicles assembled from May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2027. The offset applies to eligible parts-tariff liability; it is not a general consumer rebate or evidence that an eligible vehicle’s price will fall.

Domestic assembly therefore does not by itself eliminate tariff exposure, and the existence of an offset does not establish the final cost to the buyer. The relevant questions include where the specific model is assembled, which parts are imported, whether they qualify for the adjustment, and how the manufacturer handles the remaining costs.

Why country of origin and trade rules change the picture

Import share is only a first screen. Vehicles can be assembled in different countries, and the treatment of a particular import may depend on applicable trade rules. TrendForce’s April 2025 analysis emphasized that tariff impact varies with manufacturers’ sourcing geography and noted that some automakers with U.S. plants still relied substantially on imports. A “foreign brand” is not synonymous with “every vehicle is imported,” just as U.S. assembly does not mean every component is domestic.

The USITC reported that its economic model estimated USMCA automotive rules of origin slightly increased average U.S. light-vehicle prices. That modeled finding concerns the rules of origin, not a current estimate of tariff-driven price increases for any named brand.

A separate White House action in July 2026 imposed a 50% additional duty on specified Canadian products beginning August 19, 2026, with stated exclusions that include articles already subject to Section 232 duties. This action has a different scope from the automobile-tariff regime. It should not be treated as a universal 50% tariff on Canadian-built cars or simply added to the auto tariff rate.

How to judge whether a particular car may cost more

For a buying decision, check the vehicle rather than relying on a brand-wide headline. Useful evidence is a current, attributable price change or manufacturer announcement for the specific model and trim—not an old import-share forecast.

  1. Identify the exact model and model year. Prices and sourcing can differ across vehicles sold under the same brand.
  2. Check the vehicle’s assembly location. A U.S.-built model may still use imported parts; an imported model’s treatment can depend on its origin and applicable rules.
  3. Look for a dated pricing announcement or actual MSRP change. Distinguish a manufacturer’s stated change from dealer pricing, incentives, or a change in equipment.
  4. Read the timing and scope. Confirm which vehicles and tariff provisions an announcement covers, and whether the price change is current or prospective.

As of October 2026, the available evidence here does not establish which automakers have announced model-specific U.S. price increases following the October 2026 tariff changes. Without a dated company announcement or an attributable current price change, the brands above are a watchlist for potential cost pressure—not a forecast of who will raise prices, by how much, or when.
