Ethereum, Solana, Chainlink, Aave, Base, Arbitrum, Hyperliquid, Provenance, SSV Network and Obol make a useful cross-section of projects shaping blockchain and crypto. They are not ranked: they fill different roles, and the available evidence is much deeper for some than for others. Here, “redefining” means advancing a distinct part of the ecosystem—from network scaling and user experience to financial applications and validator infrastructure—not proving that a project will succeed.

How to read this list

These projects are not ten direct competitors. Ethereum and Solana are base-layer networks; Base and Arbitrum are scaling ecosystems; Chainlink provides data and interoperability infrastructure; Aave is a lending protocol; and SSV Network and Obol work on validator infrastructure. Hyperliquid and Provenance broaden the selection to projects tracked in recent DeFi coverage, though the material available here provides less project-specific detail about them.

The selection is thematic, not an objective “top 10”: there is no shared ranking metric that could fairly compare a blockchain, a lending application and validator software. Roadmaps, network activity, total value locked (TVL) and vendor estimates measure different things. Treat dated metrics as snapshots, not forecasts or guarantees.

Ten projects to watch, by what they are changing

1. Ethereum: scaling, user experience and base-layer resilience

The Ethereum Foundation’s 2026 priorities group work into three tracks: scaling, improving user experience and hardening the layer-1 network. The UX track includes native account abstraction and interoperability. These are the Foundation’s published priorities, not a promise that every item will ship on a particular date.

Ethereum’s scaling approach has also shifted toward rollups. Ethereum.org describes rollups as the community’s primary scaling technique, while distinguishing optimistic rollups from zero-knowledge rollups by their security models. Sidechains and validiums do not derive security from Ethereum mainnet in the same way, so the label “scaling solution” does not mean identical trust assumptions. As a measure of ecosystem activity, ethereum.org reported about $46 billion in DeFi on Ethereum as of May 2026, and approximately 13,700–14,000 tracked Ethereum nodes in April 2026, citing Etherscan’s node tracker. Both are dated figures, not current live totals.

2. Solana: faster target slots and tokenized-asset activity

Solana’s official site says it is producing slots with a 250-millisecond target, down from 400 milliseconds. The target is a technical direction, not a guarantee of user-perceived transaction speed or uninterrupted performance. The site also reports that Transaction V1 reached mainnet in September 2026 and describes Project Harmonia connecting Allfunds, which has about €1.9 trillion under administration, to tokenized funds on Solana. That figure describes Allfunds’ assets under administration; it is not the value of funds already tokenized on Solana.

A DeFi Development Corp. shareholder letter filed with the SEC reports 9.8 billion total transactions, $16.3 billion in stablecoin supply and $3.6 billion in real-world-asset (RWA) TVL on Solana in Q2 2026. It puts Solana DeFi TVL at $4.9 billion for that quarter, down from $6.2 billion in Q1 2026. These are figures reported by an interested company, not an independent forecast or an apples-to-apples comparison with other networks.

3. Chainlink: data and interoperability for on-chain finance

Chainlink’s infrastructure supplies data and interoperability services used by DeFi applications. Its feeds can help lending protocols value collateral, assess loan health and trigger liquidations—functions where inaccurate or unavailable data can affect a financial position.

Chainlink says it powers approximately 70% of global DeFi, including 80% of Ethereum DeFi and 90% of leading layer-2 DeFi. These are Chainlink’s own estimates, not independently validated figures here. They should be read as a vendor’s account of its reach, not a neutral market-share measurement.

4. Aave: lending markets and an oracle-related integration

Aave represents the application layer: it is a lending protocol, rather than a base-layer blockchain or scaling network. Chainlink’s site describes a Chainlink SVR integration with Aave and quotes Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov: “This Chainlink SVR integration increases revenue for the DAO, strengthening the Aave ecosystem.” The statement is an attributed view from a vendor page; it is not an independent assessment of the integration’s financial effect.

5. Base: a scaling ecosystem in a multichain market

Base is one of the scaling ecosystems named in CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 DeFi report. Its inclusion gives it a place in this cross-section of the multichain landscape, but the cited material does not establish a Base-specific technical milestone or activity figure for this article. The report’s broad TVL trend should not be mistaken for a Base-only result.

6. Arbitrum: another approach to scaling ecosystems

Arbitrum is also tracked in CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 report, alongside Ethereum, Solana, Base, Hyperliquid and Provenance. That makes it relevant to a view of DeFi across multiple ecosystems, but the report’s aggregate figures do not establish Arbitrum’s individual performance or the security assumptions of any particular Arbitrum system. Ethereum.org’s general warning applies: scaling approaches differ in how they connect to or derive security from Ethereum mainnet.

7. Hyperliquid: a DeFi ecosystem in the broader market picture

CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 report includes Hyperliquid in its coverage of DeFi ecosystems. The evidence available here does not provide a project-specific technical description or metric sufficient to compare Hyperliquid directly with a base layer, lending protocol or validator project. Its inclusion signals that it belongs in a broad landscape overview, not that the report proves it is redefining the sector.

8. Provenance: a project in the multichain DeFi landscape

Provenance is another ecosystem named in CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 DeFi report. The cited report supports its inclusion in a cross-section of the market, but does not provide enough project-specific detail here to substantiate a particular technical breakthrough, adoption level or competitive advantage. Those claims would need evidence beyond the market-wide figures.

9. SSV Network: distributed validator technology

CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 report discusses SSV Network in connection with distributed validator technology (DVT), which concerns how validator operations are distributed. That places it in infrastructure rather than the same category as a DeFi application or a base-layer chain. The report does not establish a comparative measure of adoption or impact for SSV Network.

10. Obol: distributed validator technology

Obol also appears in CoinGecko’s discussion of DVT. Its relevance in this selection is the validator-infrastructure category: the work is distinct from building a consumer-facing financial application or a general-purpose base layer. The cited material does not provide a comparable adoption figure or establish how its impact measures against SSV Network’s.

What the market figures do—and do not—show

CoinGecko’s Q1 2026 report, citing DeFiLlama, says multichain DeFi TVL fell 19.5%, from $114.6 billion at the start of the quarter to $92.2 billion at quarter end. That is a market-wide quarterly snapshot, not a verdict on any one project and not a measure of transaction quality, decentralization or long-term prospects. The Solana Q2 figures above use different metrics and a different quarter; they should not be treated as directly comparable to that multichain TVL change.

How to compare projects before drawing conclusions

  • Start with the role. Compare networks with networks, scaling approaches with scaling approaches, applications with applications, and infrastructure with infrastructure.
  • Check the security model. For scaling systems, ask what is secured by the underlying chain and what relies on separate assumptions; the “layer 2” label alone is not enough.
  • Match metrics carefully. A transaction count, stablecoin supply, RWA TVL, lending activity and a vendor’s estimate of market share describe different things. Note the source, period and definition for each.
  • Separate shipped work from plans. A published roadmap is a statement of direction. Confirm whether a feature has reached production before treating it as an existing capability.
  • Read interested claims in context. A company shareholder letter and a vendor’s market-share estimate can be useful signals, but attribution matters when the source has a stake in the project or its infrastructure.

The strongest conclusion from this selection is not that one project is the winner. It is that blockchain change is happening across several layers at once—and each project needs to be judged against the problem it is actually trying to solve.
