Pure Storage announced FlashArray//E on June 14, 2023, as an all-flash option for large, capacity-oriented repositories such as archives, content libraries, snapshots and backup. The company promoted efficiency gains over legacy disk storage, but those figures are vendor claims—not independent comparative test results. The phrase “multi-year leadership advantage” appeared in a separate announcement about FlashArray//X and //C, not in the reviewed FlashArray//E launch release.
What FlashArray//E is designed to store
FlashArray//E is an enterprise storage array in Pure Storage’s Pure//E family. At launch, Pure described it as unified block and file storage for large data repositories, including content libraries, backup and archives, with launch framing aimed at repositories from 1 PB and scaling to 4 PB. The later release date cited in Pure Storage’s FY2024 filing is November 2023; that is distinct from the June announcement date.
Pure’s current family data sheet positions FlashArray//E for archives, snapshot retention, content libraries and backup that is not performance-intensive. It is not presented there as a solution for every high-performance workload. The data sheet retrieved October 4, 2026 lists capacity up to 6 PB, while Pure Storage’s FY2026 filing describes repositories up to 4 PB. These are different figures in different dated company materials, not a single settled maximum; confirm the configuration and capacity available for a specific purchase.
What Pure Storage claimed against disk
In its June 14, 2023 launch announcement, Pure Storage said FlashArray//E offered 8× higher density, 3× more terabytes per watt and 7× lower drive failure rates than legacy storage. The release also claimed 80% reductions in power and space, 60% lower operational costs and 85% less e-waste compared with disk. Pure repeated the power, space, operating-cost and e-waste claims in its FY2026 filing. These are company-reported comparisons; the cited materials do not establish them as independent, like-for-like test results.

The launch release also described Pure//E as costing under $0.20 per GB with three years of support and using five times less energy than HDD. Those are dated launch claims, not a current price quote or an independently verified energy comparison. A current quote should specify usable capacity, support term, workload, included services and the disk or hybrid alternative being compared.
What the ENERGY STAR listing does—and does not—show
ENERGY STAR lists FlashArray//E as certified in the United States and Canada. Its record reports sequential streaming workload measurements captured August 14, 2026: 2.31 MiB/s/W for read and 0.99 MiB/s/W for write. These are workload-specific measurements, not a direct finding that the array uses a particular percentage less energy than HDD storage. The listing does not by itself validate Pure’s launch comparison.

How to assess it against disk or hybrid storage
For a buyer, the relevant question is not simply whether flash can be more efficient than disk, but whether the difference matters enough for the intended data and operating conditions. Compare proposals using the same capacity basis and workload assumptions.
- Total cost: Compare the purchase or subscription cost for the intended usable capacity and the same support period. Include deployment, maintenance and any applicable software or service charges.
- Energy and footprint: Request power and rack-space estimates for the planned workload and configuration. Avoid comparing vendor figures based on different systems or assumptions.
- Performance needs: Establish required latency and throughput. Capacity-oriented archives and backup may not need the same performance as active databases or other demanding workloads.
- Data protection and recovery: Compare availability, restore expectations, snapshot retention and backup workflows—not just raw capacity.
- Capacity assumptions: Ask how quoted usable capacity is calculated, including any data-reduction assumptions, headroom and expansion path.
- Fit and support: Confirm block and file protocol requirements, support and subscription terms, and the configuration’s ability to meet operational needs.
Is “multi-year advantage” a FlashArray//E claim?
Not in the reviewed FlashArray//E launch announcement. Pure Storage used the phrase “multi-year leadership advantage” in a separate June 2023 announcement about the fourth generation of FlashArray//X and FlashArray//C. That statement belongs to those product lines and should not be treated as a FlashArray//E performance finding.
