Hindenburg Research accused Roblox of overstating user numbers and engagement, but its figures remain allegations—not independently verified findings. The short-selling firm said Roblox overstated platform users by 25%–42% or more and engagement hours by more than 100%. Roblox rejected the claims as misleading. Its filings do confirm an important distinction: daily active users (DAUs) count active accounts, not necessarily unique people.
What Hindenburg accused Roblox of
In a report published October 8, 2024, Hindenburg Research alleged that Roblox misrepresented user numbers and engagement to investors, regulators and advertisers. Hindenburg disclosed that it held a short position in Roblox shares, meaning it could benefit if the share price fell. Its report is therefore an interested party’s account, not an independent adjudication.
Its estimates of users and engagement
Hindenburg estimated that Roblox overstated the number of people using its platform by 25%–42% or more. Its central argument was that DAUs count accounts, while some people may use multiple accounts. The firm also alleged that Roblox overstated engagement hours by more than 100%, drawing on a third-party consultant’s monitoring of games and servers and analysis of unusually long sessions. These percentages are Hindenburg’s estimates; the sources available do not independently verify them. Read Hindenburg’s report.
Why the word “users” is contested
Hindenburg argued that describing DAUs in terms of “people” could lead readers to take an account-based measure as a count of distinct individuals. Roblox’s own disclosures clarify that DAUs are not a unique-person count. That definitional difference is documented; it does not, by itself, establish how large any overstatement may be or whether Roblox intended to mislead anyone.

How Roblox defines its metrics
Daily active users
Roblox defines a DAU as a unique registered account that was active on a given calendar day. A person can use more than one account, so the metric does not necessarily equal the number of distinct people. Roblox has also acknowledged that undetected fraud or unauthorized access may sometimes overstate DAUs.
In its October 8, 2024 response, Roblox said an account active during a 24-hour period spanning two calendar days is counted only on the first day. The company said this approach better reflects global engagement than a strict calendar-day cutoff. The response stated that DAUs are not a measure of unique individuals and pointed readers to the company’s metric definitions. Read Roblox’s response.

Hours engaged
Roblox says its hours-engaged metric aggregates session lengths estimated from internal discrete activity events. Those sessions can include time in experiences, Roblox Studio, chat, avatar personalization and the Creator Store. The company also says estimation and system limits can cause some non-active time to be included. Hindenburg’s monitoring of a sample of games and servers is not, on the materials reviewed, a company-wide independent audit of Roblox’s platform-wide calculation.
What each side’s evidence can—and cannot—show
| Question | Hindenburg’s account | Roblox’s disclosures and response |
|---|---|---|
| What does the user metric count? | Hindenburg argues that account-based DAUs can overstate the number of individual people, including when one person has multiple accounts. Its estimate of 25%–42% or more overstatement is its own, not independently verified. | Roblox defines DAUs as active registered accounts and explicitly says they are not unique individuals. It acknowledges possible overstatement from undetected fraud or unauthorized access. |
| How is engagement measured? | Hindenburg cited third-party monitoring of games and servers and its analysis of unusually long sessions to support its allegation of more than 100% overstatement. | Roblox describes hours engaged as an estimate based on session lengths derived from internal activity events; the metric may include certain non-active time. |
| Is the measurement independently validated? | The report’s sampled monitoring does not establish an independent audit of Roblox’s complete platform-wide calculations. | Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K says operating metrics rely on internal analytics and estimates that have not been validated by an independent third party. |
The evidence types and scope differ: Hindenburg’s report advances estimates based on its monitoring and analysis, while Roblox describes metrics calculated through internal systems. Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K cautions that measurement is inherently challenging, methods may evolve and periods may not be directly comparable after changes. It also notes that activity tracking differs across devices and platforms. These disclosures explain limitations; they do not validate Hindenburg’s figures. Read Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K.

Roblox’s response to the allegations
Roblox called Hindenburg’s financial claims misleading and pointed to the company’s public filings, metric definitions, growth and cash-flow figures. The company said it strives to detect and minimize fraud and unauthorized access, while its disclosed caveat acknowledges that some may go undetected. That response presents Roblox’s position; it does not resolve the accuracy of Hindenburg’s calculations.
What the reported figures mean for investors
Company-reported figures should be read according to their unit, date and source—not treated as a neutral ruling on the dispute. For example, Roblox reported 123 million average DAUs in Q2 2026. That is an account-based company metric, not a count of distinct people. The company also reported approximately 1.6 million average daily unique paying users in the same quarter, a separate measure. What is established—and what remains unresolved
The available documents establish that Hindenburg made the allegations, disclosed a short position, and cited monitoring and analysis in support. They also establish that Roblox rejects the claims and defines DAUs as account-based, while acknowledging measurement challenges and possible overstatement. The reviewed sources do not independently verify Hindenburg’s percentages, establish the accuracy of its platform-wide estimates, or prove intentional deception.
