You can earn money from poetry through literary magazine publications, contests, fellowships and grants, or related work such as reviews and arts journalism. Pay varies by market and may be per poem, page or word; a submission or application is never guaranteed income. The examples below are verified publisher and organization terms reviewed on October 4, 2026—not a claim that 38 sites are open or that any rate is typical.

What can poets get paid?

There is no standard poetry rate. Some magazines pay a flat amount per poem, while others pay by the printed page or word count. Payment may depend on publication, and a contest prize or fellowship depends on selection and eligibility. Compare rates only after checking the unit, currency, payment trigger, fees and rights.

Market Posted terms Submission status and conditions
Poetry magazine As of its March 2026 issue: $500 per text poem, $500 per visual poem, $600 per video poem, and $400 per published prose page. Submissions are free; only previously unpublished work is considered. The magazine says it receives more than 100,000 poems a year and responses can take up to one year. Those figures do not establish an acceptance rate.
AGNI Updated August 2026: $50 per printed page of poetry; translations are paid 50% more, up to a maximum of $300. Online submission charge is $3; fee waivers are available on request, and simultaneous submissions are permitted. AGNI says it buys first worldwide serial rights.
Poetry Wales £20 per poem; £67.50 per 1,500-word review; £150 per 3,000-word article, or proportionally. Payment is made on publication. Contributors receive one issue copy, and the page says payment is through PayPal only.
Ruminous $20 per poem; a $3 flat fee covers up to three poems. Payment is immediate upon publication. Poems published online also appear in print; submissions are accepted in announced windows, so check the current call.
Subtropics $100 per poem. When reviewed in October 2026, its page said poetry submissions would resume in 2027. Do not treat this rate as evidence that submissions are currently open.

These are individual publishers’ stated terms, not an industry average or earnings forecast. Rates and windows can change; confirm the live guidelines before submitting. A higher posted rate does not by itself make a venue the best choice: fit, rights, fees, response time and payment method matter too.

Can poetry contests pay?

Yes. A contest can award substantial money, but entry fees are costs and winning is uncertain. The Society of Classical Poets’ 2026 International Poetry Competition listed a $2,000 first prize and a $20 entry fee; it requires poems to contain meter. Treat that as one example, not a prediction of likely earnings or an endorsement.

  • Castle Point Books One Poem A Day Book- Get inspired by this daily poetry journal.
  • Add meaning and satisfaction to your day.

Before entering, check the sponsor’s identity and record, eligibility, deadline, judging process, prize terms, entry limits, rights granted and whether the poem must be unpublished. The Academy of American Poets notes that an entry fee alone does not prove a contest is a scam. Consider what the sponsor does beyond the contest; a commercial sponsor whose only legitimate business model appears to be selling the winning book warrants scrutiny.

Can fellowships and grants provide income?

Poetry Coalition Fellowships

The Academy of American Poets’ 2026–27 Poetry Coalition Fellowships offer $20,000 plus a $1,100 health care allowance for a 20-hour-per-week commitment from September 2026 through June 2027. Member organizations host the positions and manage their own eligibility, application processes and timelines. This is paid literary arts work, not a per-poem fee.

What other paid work suits poets?

Poetry skills can support paid reviews, reported features, arts journalism, teaching and literary nonprofit program work, as well as commissioned writing outside poetry. Poets & Writers discusses work such as marketing, copywriting, journalism and technical writing as ways literary writers may earn money, while noting that submissions and administration can involve unpaid labor.

Its magazine accepts paid Practical Writer articles and other editorial contributions, but does not publish original poetry. Pitch the form a publication requests rather than sending poems to an outlet that does not accept them.

How should you choose and submit?

  1. Read the current guidelines. Confirm the accepted genre and form, theme, length limits, reading window, geographic or career eligibility, file format and whether work must be unpublished.
  2. Compare pay on the same basis. A per-poem amount is not directly comparable with a per-page or per-word rate. Confirm the currency, payment trigger, timing and any contributor copy.
  3. Understand the rights. Check what rights are licensed, for how long, in which media and territories, whether they revert, and whether simultaneous submission or later republication is allowed. For example, AGNI states that it buys first worldwide serial rights.
  4. Budget for fees. A reading or entry fee reduces possible net proceeds and does not buy acceptance. Prefer free submissions or request waivers where available; set a budget and track fees.
  5. Submit selectively and follow instructions. Match the venue’s aesthetic, send work you are entitled to submit, and follow its exact process. If simultaneous submissions are allowed and another venue accepts the poem, withdraw it promptly; Poetry magazine asks writers to notify it if work is accepted elsewhere.
  6. Keep a submission ledger. Record the poem’s title and version, venue, date, fee, rights, response deadline, status and any payment due. An unaccepted submission or contest entry is not income.

How can you tell if a contest or publishing offer is a scam?

The Academy of American Poets identifies warning signs such as a publisher asking writers for money, offering neither cash nor contributor copies, or providing inadequate contact information. Its guidance also recognizes that legitimate contests may charge fees, particularly when a nonprofit uses them to support its activities. Evaluate the organization and its work rather than treating every fee alike.

Be cautious of author-funded “subsidy” or vanity publication that requires upfront payment: scrutinize the publisher’s incentives, distribution, screening and promotion. Poets & Writers cautions that it cannot verify every classifieds advertiser and advises writers to check guidelines and watch for publishers that charge authors, require a purchase before publication or impose high reading fees.
