The airlines have since combined important parts of their operations—including their loyalty program and booking systems—but Hawaiian remains a distinct customer-facing brand. For travelers, the practical changes are a shared Atmos Rewards program, a shared reservation platform, and Hawaiian’s membership in oneworld, alongside consumer and service commitments imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Did Alaska Airlines buy Hawaiian Airlines?
Yes. Alaska Air Group, the parent company of Alaska Airlines, acquired Hawaiian Holdings, Hawaiian Airlines’ parent company. The deal closed on September 18, 2024. It was a parent-company acquisition followed by a staged integration—not an overnight switch that made every Hawaiian flight, booking, or customer interaction identical to Alaska’s.
At closing, Alaska said the carriers would initially continue as separate airlines with separate websites, reservation systems, and loyalty programs. Those systems have since moved closer together, while the two brands remain distinct to customers.

Will Hawaiian Airlines still be Hawaiian?
Yes. Alaska’s October 29, 2025 announcement said the FAA had issued a single operating certificate “to operate alongside Hawaiian Airlines as two separate brands.” A single certificate is an operational and regulatory milestone; it does not mean the Hawaiian name or guest-facing identity disappeared.
That distinction matters: common ownership and operating arrangements can coexist with separate airline brands. The certificate alone does not establish that service, aircraft interiors, schedules, or every customer policy are the same across both carriers.

What happened to HawaiianMiles and Mileage Plan?
Atmos Rewards is the combined loyalty program. Alaska Air Group’s SEC filing describes it as combining Alaska’s Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles. The programs’ combination does not mean every old earning, redemption, or partner rule continues unchanged.
The DOT agreement provides specific protections. It requires protection of specified mileage value and status treatment, and it bars change or cancellation fees on reward tickets for flights operated by the carrier. These commitments do not guarantee that every award seat will remain available, that every redemption will have the same cash value, or that partner-program rules will stay fixed.

Alaska’s app guidance said Atmos Rewards usernames and passwords did not change during the transition. For a current balance, status, or redemption, check the account and the terms displayed by the airline rather than relying on an older Mileage Plan or HawaiianMiles description.
Can I still book Hawaiian Airlines flights?
Yes. Hawaiian continues to operate under its own brand. Since April 22, 2026, it has used the Sabre passenger service system shared with Alaska. Alaska described the move as providing a more consistent experience from booking to boarding, and its guidance describes trip management across the two brands through the shared system and app.

The DOT agreement contains commitments concerning specified routes and services. They include service levels on qualifying nonstop routes where the airlines overlapped, critical Hawaiian inter-island passenger and cargo service, certain key Hawaii–continental U.S. routes considered at risk of losing competition, Essential Air Service support, and fair access to Honolulu airport infrastructure.

The commitments generally have a six-year term from the September 18, 2024 closing, subject to conditions and exceptions in the agreement. They are not a blanket promise that every route will continue forever or that schedules and fares will never change. The existence of a commitment also does not, by itself, establish how fully it has been met in practice.
The available company and government materials establish the deal’s terms and integration milestones, but do not provide an independent measure of the merger’s net effect on ticket prices. Avoid treating either a fare increase or a fare saving as a documented consequence without current route-specific evidence.
What does Hawaiian joining oneworld mean?
Hawaiian joined the oneworld alliance on April 23, 2026. Alliance membership can provide access to eligible partner services and benefits, but the exact benefit depends on the traveler’s status, fare, itinerary, and applicable program terms. Membership should not be read as a guarantee that every oneworld benefit applies to every ticket.
Quick Recap
What should travelers check before a trip?
- For an existing reservation: confirm the record locator, operating airline, schedule, seat, and contact details in the airline’s current trip-management tools.
- For rewards travel: review the current Atmos Rewards rules, award availability, and any partner-specific conditions before transferring or redeeming points.
- For a status or mileage question: consult the current account information and program terms; the DOT protections cover specified value and status treatment, not every future program feature.
- For alliance benefits: check the relevant oneworld and airline eligibility rules for the specific fare and itinerary.
- For route availability: use current schedules. The DOT commitments cover defined services and conditions, not every route or timetable indefinitely.
