That was a pre-auction expectation—not a confirmed winning bid or a reliable measure of what a WristMac is worth today. The available contemporary reports do not establish the lot’s final sale price.
What was the WristMac?
Introduced in 1988, WristMac was a programmable wristwatch associated with Seiko and Ex Machina. It connected to a Macintosh and offered basic functions including storing phone numbers, setting one-time or recurring alarms, and taking notes that could be exported to a disk as a text file. MacRumors’ November 2021 report describes the device and its Macintosh functions.
Calling it an “Apple Watch predecessor” is a useful shorthand for an early wearable-computing comparison, not evidence that Apple made the WristMac or that it led directly to Apple Watch. The WristMac’s documented functions were those of a Macintosh-connected watch; the reports do not describe modern smartwatch networking, sensors, or apps.
Why was one WristMac estimated at $25,000–$50,000?
The estimate concerned a particular example ComicConnect offered in November–December 2021, not a general price for the model. Contemporary coverage described it as never worn and in its original packaging. Reported included items were a dock, registration card, reference manual, and WristMac 1.2 software floppy. Bidding reportedly opened at $1. 9to5Mac’s November 22, 2021 coverage reproduces details of the auction lot.

ComicConnect CEO Stephen Fishler was reported as giving a likely range of $25,000–$50,000, while also describing a much broader possible range of $1,000–$100,000. These were pre-auction estimates, not realized prices. AppleInsider’s November 21, 2021 report attributes the likely estimate to Fishler.
Did the WristMac sell for $25,000?
The cited contemporary coverage does not establish the final sale price. The $25,000–$50,000 figure should therefore be described as the reported likely estimate for that one lot, not what a buyer paid. Nor does that estimate establish a present-day value: condition, completeness, and the circumstances of a particular sale can matter, and no general market price follows from this auction estimate.

Why did astronauts use it?
Reports say astronauts aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis used WristMac watches in 1991 alongside a Macintosh Portable and AppleLink software. The accounts describe a role in reminders and coordination. They do not establish that the watch itself sent email. MacRumors’ contemporaneous account discusses the Atlantis connection.
