The code contained a key that could access a server holding customer email addresses and customer management numbers. Toyota said 296,019 records may have been accessible, but its investigation did not confirm that anyone else accessed the server—and could not rule it out.
What happened in the T-Connect incident?
In a notice published October 7, 2022, Toyota Motor Corporation said a development subcontractor had uploaded part of the T-Connect user-site source code to GitHub with the repository mistakenly set to public. The source code included an access key for a server that stored customer email addresses and customer management numbers. Toyota said the code had been publicly accessible from December 2017 until September 15, 2022.
Toyota attributed the repository-setting error to the subcontractor while acknowledging its own responsibility for managing customer information. It said it made the GitHub code private on September 15, 2022, and changed the server access key on September 17. The account is in Toyota’s official notice, published in Japanese. SecurityWeek’s October 11, 2022 report provides contemporaneous English-language coverage.
This was an exposure of website source code and a server credential, not a reported intrusion into a vehicle.

What customer information may have been exposed?
Toyota said 296,019 email addresses and customer management numbers may have been accessible. It identified the relevant group as T-Connect user-site customers who registered their email addresses from July 2017. The figure describes records that may have been exposed; Toyota did not say that all were accessed or stolen.
Toyota said names, phone numbers and credit-card information were not within the incident’s scope. It also said email addresses used for Lexus G-Link/G-Link Lite and MyToyota/MyTOYOTA+ were outside the scope. These are Toyota’s statements about the incident, not independently audited findings.

Did Toyota confirm that customer data was accessed?
No. Toyota said a security investigation found no third-party access in the server access logs, but that access could not be completely ruled out. The company also said it had not confirmed misuse at the time of its notice. In its Japanese statement, Toyota described the logs as unable to confirm third-party access while also being unable to completely deny that it occurred; that is a translation of Toyota’s notice, not an independently verified English quotation.
Accordingly, it is accurate to describe this as a potential exposure with uncertain access—not as confirmed theft of customer information.

What should affected T-Connect customers watch for?
Toyota warned that exposed email addresses could be used in impersonation or phishing attempts. It advised customers to delete suspicious messages, avoid opening attachments from suspicious senders, and take care with links that lead to fake sites asking for account or password information.
- Check the sender and the destination of a link before interacting with a message claiming to be from Toyota or T-Connect.
- Do not enter account details or passwords on a page reached through a suspicious email link.
- Do not open unexpected attachments from senders you cannot verify.
Toyota’s historical notice is the source for the incident details and its guidance. The available information does not establish whether an affected-email lookup form or a particular support channel is still available today.

Is this the same as Toyota’s 2023 data exposure disclosure?
No. Toyota’s May 31, 2023 disclosure concerned separate potential exposures related to cloud configuration, including Japanese navigation and map service data and files in overseas dealer systems. It was a different event from the 2022 T-Connect GitHub source-code exposure and should not be combined with it. See Toyota’s 2023 notice.
