Bayer announced in April 2025 that it would exit manufacturing seed-treatment equipment in the United States, including plans to begin closing its Shakopee, Minnesota, facility over the following months. The announcement concerned equipment—not Bayer’s seed-treatment products: the company said it remained committed to seed treatments and would continue supplying customers with seed-treatment options.
What Bayer announced
A Bayer customer email announced the company’s exit from U.S. seed-treatment equipment manufacturing, according to Reuters, which reported the announcement on May 1, 2025, after it was made on April 30. The equipment is used to apply treatments such as fungicides and insecticides to seeds before planting.
Bayer planned to begin closing its SeedGrowth Equipment Innovation Center in Shakopee, Minnesota, over the following months. Reuters reported that Bayer opened the center in 2015 with a $12 million investment by Bayer in 2015, intended to improve research links between equipment and seed-treatment products.
Why Bayer said it was leaving equipment manufacturing
Bayer’s email said it would direct resources toward its primary areas of strength in crop protection products. It described the decision as “difficult” but “necessary to help secure the financial future of the company.” Reuters attributed that sentence to the customer email, not to a named Bayer executive.

Reuters also placed the announcement in the context of weak earnings, rising legal costs, a lagging share price, and investor pressure for restructuring. Those were reported as broader pressures on Bayer at the time, not as additional reasons the company specifically gave for exiting equipment manufacturing.
What the announcement means for Bayer’s seed treatments
The announcement was not a statement that Bayer was ending its seed-treatment business. Bayer’s email said it remained committed to seed treatments, and CropLife reported on May 7, 2025, that the company would continue supplying customers with seed-treatment options. The distinction is between making equipment used to apply treatments and supplying seed-treatment products.

The 2025 reports establish the planned Shakopee closure but do not confirm when it actually occurred or the facility’s current status. They also do not specify service, replacement-parts, warranty, or other support arrangements for equipment already installed. Owners who need support should seek current terms directly from Bayer or their equipment supplier rather than infer them from the announced manufacturing exit.
