The final judgment ordered Canal to pay $1,264,285.72. De Niro himself was not found personally liable on Robinson’s claims, and Canal won nothing on its counterclaims.
What was the verdict in Robert De Niro’s ex-assistant lawsuit?
The jury returned its verdict on November 9, 2023. U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman entered the final judgment on November 28, 2023. It found Canal Productions, Inc. liable to Robinson under the New York City Human Rights Law for gender discrimination and retaliation.
The award was split evenly between the two claims:
| Claim or disposition | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Gender discrimination claim against Canal Productions | $632,142.86 awarded |
| Retaliation claim against Canal Productions | $632,142.86 awarded |
| Total judgment against Canal Productions | $1,264,285.72 |
| Robinson’s claims against Robert De Niro personally | Judgment for De Niro; no award against him |
| Canal Productions’ counterclaims against Robinson | Judgment for Robinson; Canal takes nothing |
The court’s final judgment controls the amounts and disposition. It does not order De Niro personally to pay Robinson’s award.
How much did Robert De Niro’s company have to pay Graham Chase Robinson?
Canal Productions’ total judgment was $1,264,285.72, the sum of the jury’s two awards of $632,142.86 each. The title’s “$1.2 million” is a rounded description of that total; the precise judgment is just over $1.26 million.

That is different from the $12 million Robinson sought for emotional distress and reputational harm, as reported by The Guardian in 2023. The requested amount was not the amount awarded.
Who was involved, and what did the case decide?
Robinson worked for De Niro from 2008 to 2019, according to Associated Press trial coverage, which described her role at departure as vice president of production and finance. The verdict distinguished between the company and its owner: Canal was liable on Robinson’s two claims, while the jury found for De Niro personally on the claims against him.

It also resolved the company’s claims against Robinson. The final judgment states that Canal shall take nothing on its counterclaims, so there was no counterclaim recovery for the company.
What was said during and after the trial?
The Associated Press reported De Niro’s testimony included the phrase, “This is all nonsense!” That is a reported quotation from his testimony, not a finding in the judgment.

After the verdict, Robinson’s attorney David Sanford said, “We are delighted that the jury saw what we saw and returned a verdict in Chase Robinson’s favor against Robert De Niro’s company, Canal Productions.” This was the attorney’s characterization of the result; the legal allocation is set out in the judgment.

The judgment establishes the jury’s disposition and the amount awarded as of November 28, 2023. The available case materials do not establish whether an appeal, later post-judgment motion, payment, or other docket event subsequently changed the status. For developments after that date, consult the current federal docket rather than treating the 2023 judgment as proof of later payment or final appellate status.
