Contemporaneous reporting does document striking prices and increases at several restaurants, including a $205 tasting menu at Le Pavillon in May and a planned price increase at Masa in April. Those examples are useful historical reference points, not a complete ranking.
Why a reliable top 10 is not available
A meaningful ranking needs the same measure for every restaurant: for example, the per-person base price of the main dinner tasting menu on a specific date in 2022. It also needs consistent geographic boundaries and comparable menu records. The available dated reporting does not establish ten same-date prices on that basis, so ranking ten restaurants would imply a level of comparison the evidence does not support.
Prices changed during 2022, making the date especially important. A list that mixes early- and late-year prices could misstate which restaurant was more expensive at any given time.
What contemporaneous reporting does establish
| Restaurant or context | What was reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Le Pavillon | Eater NY reported a $205 tasting menu in May 2022. Read the May 2022 report. | A dated reported menu price, not a full-year price or a final all-in bill. |
| Masa | Eater NY reported on March 10, 2022 that Masa’s sushi bar planned to raise its price by up to $150 in April. The report described Masa as the country’s most expensive restaurant. Read the March 2022 report. | This is a report of a planned increase, not by itself a verified single 2022 price. “Up to $150” describes the increase, not the meal’s total price. |
| Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, and Shuko | Eater NY’s May 2022 coverage also named these restaurants among those raising prices. Read the May 2022 report. | The reporting shows prices were moving; it does not provide a complete, comparable top-ten list. |
| New York sushi menus | A January 4, 2022 Eater NY report discussed $400 sushi menus and linked the growth of expensive omakase to supply constraints, competition for wild seafood, and demand from affluent diners. Read the January 2022 report. | Market context, not evidence that every such menu cost $400 or a ranking of NYC restaurants. |
Menu price is not the same as the total dining bill
A tasting-menu figure describes the menu price reported, not necessarily what a diner ultimately pays. Supplements, optional drink pairings, tax, gratuity, and booking fees can change the total. Those costs should be itemized separately before comparing all-in spending; the cited reports do not establish a consistent all-in total across restaurants.

What Michelin stars can—and cannot—tell you
The MICHELIN Guide’s October 2022 announcement identified 19 new starred restaurants for that year’s New York Guide and described SAGA as a tasting-menu-only restaurant receiving two stars. See the MICHELIN Guide announcement. Eater’s contemporaneous roundup also covers distinctions in the 2022 guide. See Eater NY’s roundup.
These guide distinctions provide fine-dining context, but stars do not measure menu prices. They cannot fill the gaps needed for an expense ranking.

How to compare historical restaurant prices fairly
- Set a clear geography, such as restaurants within New York City.
- Choose one price basis, such as the per-person base dinner tasting menu.
- Attach each price to the date it applied and favor an official dated menu or contemporaneous price report.
- List supplements, pairings, tax, gratuity, and fees separately; calculate an all-in total only when those details are verified on a consistent basis.
- Label the certainty of each figure: a dated menu, a reported price, or an estimate are not interchangeable.
Without those consistent details for ten restaurants, the sound conclusion is that a complete 2022 top-ten ranking cannot be established from the available dated reports.
