Tufan Erginbilgic is the chief executive of Rolls-Royce Holdings. The company announced his appointment on 26 July 2022, and he took up the role on 1 January 2023, succeeding Warren East. “Incoming” described him at the time of the announcement; he is CEO now.
What is Erginbilgic’s background?
Erginbilgic trained as an engineer and spent 1997 to 2020 at BP, where he held senior roles in the company’s downstream business. Rolls-Royce’s current executive profile says he became chief executive of that business in 2014. Its remit included refining, petrochemicals, service stations, lubricants, midstream operations and Air BP jet fuel.
Earlier in his BP career, he led BP and Castrol’s lubricants business and served as chief of staff to BP’s group chief executive. Rolls-Royce’s appointment announcement describes him as having spent more than 20 years at BP, but its sources differ on the exact number of years he served on BP’s executive team, so a precise duration is not established.
What did he do after BP?
Erginbilgic joined Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in 2020. Rolls-Royce’s current profile describes him as a GIP partner until 2022 and a senior adviser from January 2023 through January 2024; those are past roles, not his current job.

His listed qualifications are a BSc in engineering, an MBA and an MA in economics. Rolls-Royce identifies him as British and Turkish. The 2022 appointment announcement said he had lived and worked in Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the US.
Why did Rolls-Royce appoint him?
Rolls-Royce Chair Anita Frew said the board valued Erginbilgic’s experience leading multinational organisations, strategic and operational expertise, understanding of safety-critical industries including aerospace, and familiarity with opportunities and challenges connected to low-carbon technologies. This was the company’s stated rationale for the appointment.

Which board role does he hold?
Rolls-Royce’s current board profile lists Iveco Group NV as Erginbilgic’s non-executive directorship. The appointment announcement also named DCC plc and Tupras in 2022 and said he would review those positions; that older notice is not evidence that he still holds them.
