First launched in Japan in October 1997, it brought a distinctive power-split hybrid system to consumers, then expanded to the United States and Europe in 2000. Toyota’s sales figures and history show its reach and the spread of hybrid models across the company’s lineup; they do not prove the Prius alone caused the industry’s wider shift.
When did the first Prius come out?
Toyota began developing the car through its G21 project in 1993, aiming to create a vehicle for the 21st century with a major improvement in fuel efficiency. The first-generation Prius launched in Japan in October 1997. Toyota describes it as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle. Toyota’s history of the Prius documents the project and launch.
Toyota released the Prius in the United States and Europe in 2000. Its second generation arrived in 2003 with Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II), which Toyota says improved the system. The company’s chronology also records hybrids beyond the Prius during this period: the Estima minivan and Crown in 2001, Dyna and Toyoace trucks in 2003, and the Harrier/Lexus RX 400h SUV in 2005. Toyota’s hybrid-vehicle history shows how the technology reached additional vehicle types.
Why was the Prius important?
The Prius gave buyers a high-profile, mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid rather than a battery-electric car. Its significance lies in making hybrid technology visible in a dedicated consumer model and establishing a vehicle Toyota continued to develop across generations. Toyota reported more than 1.8 million Prius sales worldwide by July 2010 and announced its one-millionth U.S. sale in April 2011. These figures indicate the model’s reach, although they are company-reported totals, not independent measures of its broader market effect. Toyota’s 2011 U.S. sales announcement gives the one-million milestone.

How does the original Prius hybrid system work?
The first Prius paired a specially designed 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor. A planetary gear power-split device distributed engine power and functioned as a continuously variable transmission. Depending on driving conditions, the engine and motor could propel the car together or separately. The system also shut off the engine at idle and used regenerative braking to recover some energy while slowing down. The gasoline engine remained part of the propulsion system, so the Prius was not a battery-electric vehicle. Toyota describes these features in its first-generation Prius history.
Toyota reported first-generation fuel economy of 28.0 km/L on Japan’s 10-15 test cycle. That is a historical figure for a specific Japanese test procedure, not a rating directly comparable with modern U.S. EPA figures. Toyota also says the original Prius doubled fuel efficiency and halved CO2 emissions compared with existing gasoline-powered cars; its cited profile does not specify the comparison protocol, so those should be read as Toyota’s historical claims rather than independent test results. Toyota’s hybrid history provides the cycle figure and comparison.

Did the Prius make other car companies build hybrids?
Toyota said in 2011 that 13 other auto brands had entered the hybrid market since the Prius’s introduction. That statement places the Prius within a growing competitive landscape, but it does not establish that the model alone caused those companies’ decisions. The available evidence supports describing the Prius as an early mass-market proof point that helped normalize hybrids—not as the sole cause of automakers’ later strategies. Toyota’s own account of its role is in its 2011 announcement.

Toyota’s 2025 retrospective describes the Prius as having reached its fifth generation and recalls awards for that generation. Its persistence across generations is evidence that Toyota maintained the model and hybrid technology over time. Longevity alone, however, cannot measure how much the Prius changed the whole auto industry. Toyota’s hybrid history documents the model’s continuing development.
