For a GST-registered small business or freelancer in India, the returns and deadlines that apply depend on your taxpayer category, filing frequency and tax period. A period with no sales does not automatically mean there is nothing to file: GSTR-1 is still due, and a nil GSTR-3B is permitted only when its separate conditions are met.
Which GST returns do small businesses and freelancers need to understand?
For ordinary registered taxpayers making outward supplies, the key forms in this filing workflow serve different purposes:
- GSTR-1 reports outward supplies. The GST Portal describes it as a monthly or quarterly statement for normal and casual registered taxpayers. Its FAQ lists exceptions to this filing group, including composition taxpayers, input service distributors and persons liable to deduct or collect tax under specified provisions.
- GSTR-3B is a separate return filing workflow. It is not a substitute for GSTR-1; check the requirements for your taxpayer category and period.
- GSTR-2B is an input tax credit (ITC) statement. The GST Portal says it uses supplier-filed GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A, IFF and other specified data, and that recipients use it to take the appropriate ITC in the relevant GSTR-3B sections. Review and reconcile the information before filing.
Whether these forms apply to you cannot be decided from your job title alone. Registration type and taxpayer category matter; check your obligations for the relevant period in the GST Portal or with a qualified tax professional.
Do I need to file GST returns if I had no sales?
Yes, GSTR-1 remains due even if there was no business activity during the tax period. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ explicitly says the form must be filed in that situation.

No sales by itself does not establish that you can file a nil GSTR-3B. The GST Portal describes a nil GSTR-3B as appropriate only when the period has no outward supplies, no inward supplies and no tax liability. Its nil-return workflow also requires that there be no auto-populated return data, no manual entries and no outstanding interest or late-fee liability. If any of those conditions is not met, do not treat the return as nil; review the applicable filing requirements.
What is the GSTR-1 due date?
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists these standard dates:
- Monthly filers: the 11th of the succeeding month.
- Quarterly filers: the 13th of the month after the quarter.
These are standard dates, not a guarantee that the deadline for every tax period is unchanged. Government notifications may extend a period’s due date. Confirm the date shown for your specific tax period in the GST Portal before relying on a calendar reminder.
Can a small business or freelancer file quarterly?
The Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme allows eligible taxpayers to file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly through challans. The GST Portal’s QRMP FAQ, accessed in 2026, states a PAN-based aggregate annual turnover threshold of up to ₹5 crore in the current financial year and the preceding financial year, where applicable. It also says the latest due GSTR-3B must have been filed. Taxpayer-type restrictions and portal preconditions may apply, so confirm eligibility and opt-in status in the portal for the relevant quarter.

| Filing arrangement | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B cadence | Tax-payment cadence | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly filing | Monthly | Monthly, as applicable | Confirm the period’s deadline in the GST Portal; the standard GSTR-1 date is the 11th of the succeeding month. |
| QRMP, if eligible | Quarterly | Monthly by challan | Confirm turnover, taxpayer eligibility, filing preconditions, opt-in status and period-specific dates in the GST Portal. The standard quarterly GSTR-1 date is the 13th of the month after the quarter. |
Under QRMP, the optional Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) lets eligible taxpayers furnish B2B invoices for the first two months of a quarter. Consider whether customers need those invoices reported before the quarterly return; check the current portal rules and applicable dates for the facility.
How can I prepare a GST return?
The GST Portal lists three preparation routes for GSTR-1. Choose based on your invoice volume, complexity and preferred workflow:
- Enter information online in the GST Portal.
- Upload data using the GST Portal’s Returns Offline Tool.
- Use a third-party application through an ASP/GSP. This is an optional route, not a requirement to file.
Before choosing third-party software, verify that it supports the forms and filing frequency you use, fits your invoice workflow, provides appropriate data-security and user-access controls, and has current pricing and support terms you can confirm. No particular provider or vendor-specific feature is established here. Whichever route you use, review your return information and reconcile ITC against GSTR-2B before filing.

There is no blanket answer. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ confirms that composition taxpayers are outside the ordinary GSTR-1 filing group, but that fact alone does not establish whether a particular freelancer can or should choose the composition scheme. Eligibility depends on the person’s circumstances and current rules. The CBIC composition FAQ available for this topic includes historical threshold information, so it is not a sufficient basis for a current eligibility decision. Check up-to-date official guidance or consult a qualified tax professional before choosing a scheme.
