The size of the shortfall depends on which forecast you compare against: the gap ranged from 4,623 vehicles versus Tesla’s own compilation to 21,773 versus FactSet’s target cited by AP.
How far did Tesla’s deliveries fall short?
Tesla’s 418,227 deliveries were below all three published benchmarks, but the estimates were not one shared consensus. Each came from a different source or polling group.

The percentages above are calculations from the cited estimates and reported deliveries. Tesla’s own page also gave a median estimate of 420,399 from its 20-analyst compilation, which would put actual deliveries 2,172 vehicles, or about 0.5%, below that median. Tesla said its table contained company-compiled analyst estimates and that it did not endorse the analysts’ information, recommendations or conclusions.
What does the result say about Tesla’s year?
Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down 9% year over year, according to AP. That annual decline puts the Q4 miss in a broader context: deliveries were weaker across the year, not just below fourth-quarter forecasts. AP reported that BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles in 2025 and became the largest EV maker by sales. The two figures are reported vehicle sales and deliveries, respectively, and should not be read as a like-for-like comparison of company revenue or profit.

What was reported as pressure on demand?
Reuters described the loss of U.S. electric-vehicle purchase tax credits and rising global competition as pressures on demand. AP likewise cited the expiry at the end of September of a $7,500 U.S. EV purchase credit as a headwind. Reuters noted that Q3 had benefited from buyers rushing to claim credits before they expired, which could make comparisons with the following quarter more difficult.
Those explanations are reported context, not a measured breakdown of why deliveries fell. Reuters attributed expectations of weakness in North America and Europe to Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu. The available figures do not establish how much of the decline came from the credit change, competition, regional demand, model mix or other factors.

Why do the forecast numbers differ?
Analyst estimates are assembled by different providers and can use different contributors or methods. The sources here do not establish that Tesla’s compilation, Visible Alpha’s poll and FactSet’s target used the same sample or methodology. For that reason, the most precise way to describe the result is to name the benchmark: Tesla’s average, Visible Alpha’s poll or FactSet’s target—not to present one figure as the definitive market consensus.
For readers assessing Tesla as an investment, deliveries are a measure of vehicles handed to customers, not a complete report on the quarter’s revenue, margins, cash flow or share-price performance. The delivery figures alone cannot show how the quarter affected Tesla’s finances or stock.
