Bill Gates’ Car Collection: What’s Known About the Porsche 959 and Other Cars

A 1997 profile names several cars associated with Bill Gates and gives a historical value for his Porsche 959, but current ownership and a most-expensive ranking remain unverified.

No reliable source establishes a current, confirmed list of Bill Gates’s cars or identifies which one is his most expensive today. A 1997 TIME profile names several vehicles associated with him and reports that his Porsche 959 was valued at $380,000 at the time. A later list published by The Times of India is explicitly unconfirmed. That evidence does not support a definitive ranking of ten cars by price.

Why a “10 most expensive” ranking cannot be verified

To rank a collection by price, the underlying cars must first be confirmed as owned, and each needs a comparable valuation tied to a date and market. The available reporting does not establish those basics: the older account is a snapshot from 1997, while the later list says its information comes from online reporting and lacks official confirmation. Neither provides a consistent set of current values.

As a result, calling any ten vehicles Gates’s current collection—or naming one as its most expensive—would go beyond what these sources show. The reported cars below are best read as historical or unconfirmed associations, not a verified inventory.

What the 1997 TIME profile reported

TIME’s 1997 profile, “In Search of the Real Bill Gates”, describes Gates as someone who loved fast cars and recounts an early Porsche 911. It also names a Porsche 930 Turbo, called “the rocket” in the profile, a Mercedes, a Jaguar XJ6, a Carrera Cabriolet 964, a Porsche 959, a Ferrari 348 and a Lexus. This is a dated account of cars he had owned or driven by then; it does not establish what he owns now.

The Porsche 959’s reported historical value

TIME reported the Porsche 959 at $380,000 in 1997. That is a historical figure from the profile, not a current market estimate, and the article says the car had ended up impounded in a customs shed because it could not meet U.S. import emission standards. The amount should not be compared with modern estimates for other cars as though all were valued on the same basis.

What a 2026 vehicle list adds—and what it does not

A February 23, 2026 article from The Times of India, “Bill Gates’ car collection: From a Ford Focus to the legendary Porsche 959”, lists a Ford Focus, Porsche 911 Turbo 930, Porsche 959, Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model X, BMW 760Li, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Mercedes-Benz 500SL and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, among others. The article itself cautions that the account is based on information available online and has no official confirmation. These are reported associations, not independently established current holdings.

The same article claims that 337 Porsche 959s were produced and calls the model the most famous car in Gates’s collection. That description does not establish that the 959 is currently his most expensive car; fame, production numbers and value are different questions.

What can responsibly be said about the most expensive car?

The Porsche 959 is the clearest focal point in the available reporting because it appears in both accounts and has a dated value attached to it in TIME’s 1997 profile. But the sources do not show whether Gates still owns it, what it might be worth now, or how its value compares with any other car attributed to him. The most accurate answer is therefore that the present-day most expensive car in his collection is not established by this reporting.

A defensible ranking would need confirmed ownership for every vehicle, a shared valuation date and market, and a clear distinction between original prices and current estimates. Without those, a numbered top ten would imply a level of certainty the evidence does not provide.
