There is no single visual detail or boot test that proves every Pokémon handheld game is genuine. The safest approach is to assess several clues together: the price, the cartridge and packaging, any seals, whether the listing matches the item’s region and language, and the seller’s photos. Nintendo’s guidance is a warning-sign checklist, not a model-by-model authentication chart.
What to check before buying a Pokémon game
Nintendo advises buyers to be cautious about offers priced well below average retail, poor-looking cartridge or packaging print, materials that are missing or shipped separately, questionable quality seals, and mismatches in region or language. It recommends applying the same caution to used games. These clues justify closer inspection; none alone establishes that a specific copy is authentic or counterfeit. See Nintendo’s counterfeit-detection guidance.
- Assess the offer and seller. An unusually low price is a warning, not a verdict: Nintendo says it may indicate a counterfeit or a scam. Compare the listing with current offers for the same title and condition, and do not treat Nintendo’s historical suggested retail prices as current market values.
- Request photos of the actual item. Ask for clear, well-lit images of the cartridge’s front and back, plus the box and manual if they are included. A generic product image or listing title does not verify the copy being sold.
- Compare the physical item with the listing. Check that the printed game identity, region, and language match what the seller claims and what you want to buy. Look for clear, complete print and inspect any seal markings in context.
- Confirm exactly what is included. Establish whether the offer is cartridge-only or includes packaging and a manual. Check whether the components are being presented together or shipped separately; missing materials or separately shipped components are among Nintendo’s warning signs.
- Keep conclusions proportional to the evidence. If a clue is inconsistent, pause and ask for more evidence or choose another seller. A convincing-looking label or a game that starts successfully is not, by itself, a universal authentication test.
How to compare two listings or copies
Compare like with like: the same game, region, language, and condition. Give more weight to clear evidence from the specific item than to descriptions or a seller’s general claim that games are authentic.
| What to compare | What to look for | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Price and listing context | Whether the offer is conspicuously below comparable current listings | A reason to investigate further; Nintendo says a very low price may indicate counterfeit goods or a scam, but price alone is not proof. |
| Cartridge and packaging | Clear, complete print and consistency between the game identity on the cartridge, box, and listing | Discrepancies are warning signs, not a standalone authentication result. |
| Seals | Whether the relevant seal markings appear appropriate to the item and its context | A seal is one check among several; the scope of Nintendo’s current licensed-product seal guidance is limited, as explained below. |
| Completeness and condition | Whether the listing is cartridge-only or includes packaging and a manual, and whether components are presented or shipped separately | Clarifies what is being sold and helps identify missing or separated materials. |
| Region and language | Whether the item matches the listing and your intended region and language | A mismatch warrants questions before purchase. |
What Nintendo says about seals
Nintendo’s counterfeit FAQ recommends checking for the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or Original Nintendo Licensee Seal of Quality as part of a broader assessment. A separate Nintendo page describes the “Official Nintendo Licensed Product” seal as assurance that licensed accessories and peripherals were evaluated and licensed for use with Nintendo systems. That page concerns accessories and peripherals; it does not establish that a seal seen on any old game cartridge proves the cartridge is genuine. Read Nintendo’s licensed and unlicensed product guidance within that scope.

What to do if a DS card triggers a DSi error
Nintendo documents a specific case involving the message “An Error Occurred. Press and hold POWER to Turn the System Off” during a Nintendo DS game-card game. In that scenario, Nintendo says the game is likely counterfeit and recommends trying the card in an original-style Nintendo DS or a DS Lite. If it continues to fail there, Nintendo says the card is more likely defective; if it works there, Nintendo says it is likely counterfeit. Follow the guidance only for this exact error scenario, not as a universal test for Pokémon cartridges or other system messages. Details are in Nintendo’s DSi error support article.
What visual checks cannot establish
Nintendo’s official general guidance does not provide a definitive, model-by-model authentication chart for every Pokémon cartridge across Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS. The historical Nintendo Anti-Piracy Training Manual includes examples for Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, and DSi software, but it is not a current visual standard for every title, region, or revision. Its suggested retail figures—$29.99–$35.99 for DS software and $19.99–$39.99 for Game Boy Advance software—are historical US prices from around 2009, not present-day valuation guidance or counterfeit cutoffs.

The reviewed Nintendo sources do not establish universal shell-color, circuit-board layout, stamp, screw, or chip-marking rules for all Pokémon releases. Opening a cartridge or comparing an isolated detail against an unverified image is not a dependable general-purpose buyer test. Treat unfamiliar visual features as questions to investigate, not proof.

- Request photos of the actual cartridge and any included box or manual.
- Check that game identity, region, and language align across the item, listing, and your needs.
- Compare the price with similar current offers, but do not let price alone decide authenticity.
- Clarify whether the listing is cartridge-only or complete with packaging and materials.
- Walk away if the seller will not provide useful evidence or the item’s details remain inconsistent.
For example, Nintendo’s official manual identifies Pokémon Platinum as a Nintendo DS title, but that fact does not authenticate any particular copy or marketplace listing. A listing for a “Pokémon Platinum Nintendo DS game cartridge” still needs to be assessed using the physical evidence and seller information above. See the official Pokémon Platinum instruction booklet.
