In January 2024, GitHub said it expected to invest in 8–10 startups that year through the GitHub Fund, focusing on AI, security, infrastructure, and DevOps. That was a forecast, not a confirmed result: the official sources cited here do not establish whether GitHub met the target or whether its historical interest form is still active.
What is the GitHub Fund?
GitHub and Microsoft’s venture arm, M12, launched the initiative in November 2022 as the $10 million M12 GitHub Fund. GitHub described it as focused on seed-stage open-source developer tools and named CodeSee as its first investment. GitHub later described the initiative as a $10 million fund partnered with M12. Those historical descriptions do not establish the fund’s current size, terms, or availability.
GitHub’s November 2022 launch announcement and its Accelerator cohort retrospective provide that background.
What did GitHub report about the fund’s first year?
In a post published January 25, 2024, and updated January 26, GitHub said it and M12 reviewed more than 350 open-source startups across developer tools, AI and AI infrastructure, security, cloud-native infrastructure, and related areas. It reported investing in 10 companies during the inaugural year, while naming seven examples:
#1 Best Overall
- Bytewax
- CodeSee
- Novu
- OpenSauced
- Rubbrband
- ToolJet
- Unify, formerly Ivy ML
GitHub said a few more companies would be announced the following year. The seven names are examples from the post, not a complete list of the 10 investments it reported. These figures are GitHub’s statements; the cited sources do not provide an independent audit of fund results.

What support did founders receive besides investment?
GitHub described support aimed at helping portfolio companies build their products and reach users. It said the program helped companies benchmark projects and grow communities, and offered opportunities for founders to speak at GitHub Universe, receive leadership spotlights, appear in the GitHub Start-it-Up series, and access programs providing GPUs for model training and tuning.
GitHub also reported connecting companies with GitHub and Microsoft product teams on go-to-market strategy, sales, product differentiation, and design partnerships. It said it hosted a founder pitch event at GitHub Universe 2023 and met with more than 20 founders. These are GitHub’s descriptions of its own program, not guarantees of support available to every participant.

In the 2024 post, ToolJet founder and CEO Naveenth Padanna Kalathil said: “Sharing our journey on GitHub isn’t just about showing off code, it’s about building bridges. The connections we’ve forged with users, contributors, and partners have become instrumental in shaping and advancing ToolJet’s mission.”
What did GitHub expect to invest in during 2024?
In January 2024, GitHub said it expected to invest in 8–10 innovative startups that year, at a pace similar to the prior year. It identified AI, security, infrastructure, and DevOps as areas of focus. This was a forward-looking expectation made at the time, not confirmation that the investments were completed.
Did GitHub meet its 2024 target, and is the fund accepting interest now?
The cited official sources do not establish whether the 8–10-startup target was met. They also do not verify whether the interest form linked from the January 2024 post remains active. The post invited open-source-first companies, maintainers, and open-source builders raising venture capital to express interest, but its historical invitation should not be treated as confirmation that applications or inquiries are currently open.

GitHub’s Accelerator retrospective describes challenges open-source projects can face, including limited maintainer capacity and burnout risk; difficulty measuring project impact or identifying companies using a project; licensing and commercialization questions; and financial management, accounting, tax, and reporting work that can vary by country. These are contextual challenges GitHub identified, not evidence that every GitHub Fund portfolio company faced them.

Best Value
The Fund was described as venture investment for startups, historically focused on seed-stage open-source developer tools. That makes it different in kind from grants, sponsorships, or accelerator support. The available sources do not state current investment terms or eligibility, so founders should not assume a present-day offer or application route based on the 2024 announcement.
