Pink Floyd’s music catalog sale to Sony Music was reported in October 2024 at approximately US$400 million. The reported deal covered the band’s recorded-music rights and name-and-likeness rights, but not its songwriting and publishing rights. Sony had not publicly confirmed the transaction’s terms in the cited coverage, so the amount and scope should be treated as reported—not officially disclosed—figures.

What was reported about the sale?

Music Business Worldwide reported on October 1, 2024, that Pink Floyd had agreed that week to sell its recorded-music catalog to Sony Music. The Guardian published its account the following day, and Variety also reported a deal valued at approximately US$400 million. Those outlets attributed the figure to people familiar with the transaction; it was not a purchase price disclosed in a Sony announcement. Music Business Worldwide, The Guardian, and Variety reported the transaction.

Earlier reports had discussed a higher asking price or a possible figure around $500 million. Those figures were speculation about negotiations; they are not the later reported agreed value.

Which rights were included—and which were not?

The reports described a sale of recorded-music rights, commonly understood as rights in sound recordings or masters. Music Business Worldwide also specified neighboring rights, while reports identified name-and-likeness rights. Variety said those rights could cover uses such as merchandise and theatrical projects. The precise legal scope of the reported agreement was not publicly set out in the cited coverage.

Songwriting and publishing rights are separate from rights in recordings. The Guardian and Variety reported that songwriting rights remained with the individual writers, and Music Business Worldwide said music publishing was excluded. The deal should therefore not be described as Sony buying every right to every Pink Floyd song.

Rights category What the reports said
Recorded music Included in the reported sale to Sony Music.
Neighboring rights Specified in Music Business Worldwide’s report.
Name and likeness Included in reporting; Variety described potential merchandise and theatrical uses.
Songwriting and publishing Reportedly excluded; songwriting remained with individual writers.

Was the $400 million price officially confirmed?

No public Sony statement confirming the price or terms appears in the cited contemporary reporting. The Guardian said Sony had not released a statement or responded to its request for comment as of October 2, 2024. Variety likewise reported that Sony and band representatives declined or did not respond to requests for comment. The approximately US$400 million figure is consequently best presented as the reported transaction value, not a verified public disclosure.

Music Business Worldwide also reported that Pink Floyd (1987) Limited and Pink Floyd Music Limited together had revenue of £40.399 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023, equivalent in that report to about US$50 million. That is revenue for two named companies, not catalog profit and not evidence of how Sony calculated the reported purchase price.

What later Sony material does—and does not—show

Sony Music announced a 2025 release of Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII in vinyl, CD, and digital formats, including Dolby Atmos. Sony Group’s FY26 first-quarter supplemental information, published in 2026, listed the project among its top 10 recorded-music projects for the quarter ended June 30, 2025. Sony’s footnote says project totals aggregate album and digital-track exploitation. These materials document later Pink Floyd release activity, but they do not independently confirm the reported 2024 sale price or legal terms. Sony Music’s release announcement and Sony Group’s FY26 first-quarter supplement provide those later details.
