Yat Siu’s case for 2025 as a major year for blockchain games rested on more than crypto prices: he argued that better gameplay, wider discovery, digital ownership and cross-chain networks could bring conventional players and crypto-native users closer together. That was a forecast, not proof that the sector delivered on it. GamesBeat published its interview with the Animoca Brands executive chairman on January 2, 2025, and updated it June 18, 2025; it does not establish whether his predictions came true.
What Siu predicted about blockchain games
In a January 2025 interview with GamesBeat, Animoca Brands executive chairman Yat Siu said he expected 2025 to be a major year for Web3 gaming. His thesis was about a possible meeting of two audiences: crypto users becoming more active in games, and players drawn by compelling games encountering blockchain features.
Siu described the current overlap as small: “The intersection between the people who play Web2 games and the Web3 natives is very small, for now.” He saw that gap as an opportunity, not evidence that mainstream adoption was already underway. In his view, a game could attract people first through its genre and play experience, then introduce blockchain elements such as ownership or community participation.
Why he thought games could bridge the gap
Gameplay should work without token incentives
Siu’s argument starts with the game itself. A blockchain title needs to be enjoyable beyond any token reward if it is to retain players who are not primarily seeking crypto incentives. He pointed to Off the Grid, a battle royale game, as an example he believed could appeal to traditional shooter players. He also said influencer attention alone would not be enough: established games have entrenched communities and player reputations, so newcomers need sustained marketing and reasons to keep playing.

Discovery can bring new audiences in
Siu identified Telegram as a potential game-discovery and distribution channel, while describing TON as a place to develop game-related tools and primitives. But he also acknowledged a basic problem with measuring that audience: sybil activity can make sign-ups look larger than the number of genuine players. He was uncertain how many users acquired through this route were real gamers.
Ownership and open networks may add value
For Siu, digital ownership is a reason some players might care about blockchain games: players may value control over in-game assets. He also argued that open blockchain systems can give other developers predictable rules to build on, potentially creating network effects beyond a single game. Those are his views about what ownership and open systems might enable; the interview does not independently establish how well any particular game implements them or whether players broadly value the features.

Identity could separate contributors from reward farmers
Siu described Mocaverse and Moca ID as an identity-and-reputation approach intended to reward people who contribute to a network, rather than bots or opportunistic reward farmers. He framed the goal this way: “We want to make sure you give the value of that network to actual people who contribute value to the network.” That is an executive’s description of the initiative, not an independent assessment of its design or effectiveness.

The examples below are those Siu chose in the interview; they are not a neutral ranking or a comparative evaluation of product quality, ownership, access or long-term community.

What could undermine the forecast
Siu’s own interview acknowledged obstacles that complicate a simple story of mainstream adoption: skepticism about scams or limited utility, bots and sybil farming, players leaving after promotional rewards, and the need to keep marketing after an initial launch. A game can attract attention without building a durable community, and the interview does not provide comparable evidence on retention or gameplay across the named projects.
GamesBeat also cited figures attributed to ChainPlay: 93% of announced blockchain-game projects reportedly were dead, average project lifespan was four months, and 88% reportedly saw token prices fall more than 90% from their all-time highs. GamesBeat’s page did not establish the underlying report year, and the original ChainPlay methodology was not reviewed for this article. These figures should therefore be read as numbers GamesBeat attributed to ChainPlay, not as independently measured results. They describe the risks associated with the sector’s projects and tokens, not proof that every game failed or that a particular title will succeed.

What the prediction means for players and investors
For players, Siu’s thesis suggests evaluating a blockchain game as a game first. Consider whether its core play is appealing without rewards, how it is discovered and accessed, what ownership means in practice, and whether its community appears to persist beyond token incentives. The interview does not offer a consistent product-by-product assessment on those points, so its examples cannot substitute for examining each title.
For investors, the forecast is a company executive’s outlook, not a guarantee of adoption or returns. Siu also said Animoca expected to add hundreds of millions of users to Web3 in 2025; that was a forecast in the interview, not a verified outcome. His view that no single chain would win—“We think it’s all cross-chain as well. We don’t think there’s such a thing as one chain that will win over the others.”—is likewise an industry position, not an established result.
